THOMAS J. DUFFY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO FLORENCE E. SMALLEY, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOTTLE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,056, dated July 1'7, 1900.
Application filed February 23,1899- rm N 70 (No model-J To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. DUFFY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle Attachments, of which the following, taken in connection with theaccompanyin g drawings,is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment for bottles, jars, (to. by which they may be more easily handled; and it consists in a band surrounding the neck of the bottle or jar and an attached loop whichconstitutes a handle, the object being to make a cheap, durable, and convenient device by which the user may convey or manipulate the said bottle, jar, &c. I attain this object by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows in perspective awide-mouth bottle having my attachment connected. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the upper part of the bottle and the handle. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A represents a wide-mouth bottle. I have selected this style of bottle for illustration, but do not confine myself to any particular style of bottle nor, in fact, to any vessel, as my invention will apply equally well to a great quantity of utensils of this nature. A wide metallic band B is fitted to the neck or upperpart of the utensil, as shown. To this band B a handle H is soldered or otherwise attached at or near its ends. This handle H may be formed of sheet metal, either plain or with ribs and turned edges or corrugations. 3 5 The handle may be of the relative size shown in full lines or may be made large, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The handle H is shown as made by bending the metal of which it consists in such a manner that the ends fold over each other at 0; but in practice this is not necessary, although in some cases desirable. By this arrangement but a single soldered joint is required for uniting the ends of the band B and the handle.
I claim- 1. A handle attachment for bottles, jars, &c., consisting of a metallic band completely embracing the neck and having its ends per= manently connected and a fiat metallic strip bent to form a looplike handle rigidly attached at both of its ends to said band, sub stantially as described.
2. A handle attachment for bottles, jars, &c., consisting of a metallic band embracing the neck, and aflat strip bent to form a loop like handle attached along one of its sides to the band by a soldered joint, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 18th day of February, A. D. 1899.
THOMAS J. DUFFY.
