Be it known that I, H. C. GRIFFIN, of Franklin, in the county ot` Merrimack, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and amusing toy for children, which I term the Magic Arrow; and I d o hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification, in which* Figure I is a perspective view ofthe invention, showing the manner in which it is used.
Figure 2, a view of the portion ofthe arrow which is hidden by the hand ofthe operator in tig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. v
This invention relates to a simple toy for children, designed to supersede the ordinary bow and arrow, and it consists ot' an elastic cord lconstructed of India rubber or other suitable elastic material, and having its ends connected to theprongs ot` a forked bar, and an arrow provided with a slit near its head to receive the elastic cord, which, by drawing back the arrow, is stretched or distended, so as to propel the arrow a considerable distance when the same is released.
A represents a bar of metal or wood having two prongs a a to which the ends of an elastic cord, B','are attached. This cord may be constructed of any suitable elastic material; India rubber would probably answer the best purpose. C is an arrow, which may he constructed of wood of any suitable length, and made thicker at one end than at Elio other to form a head, Z1. This arrow is notched at the inner part of its head to reccire the elastic cord B, as shown clearly in tig. I at e; and it will be seen that the operator, by holding the bar in one hand and drawing hack the arrow C with the other in the direction indicated by arrow I, the cord B will be stretched and distcnded, and by relaxing the hold on the arrow, the cord B, in suddenly assuming its normal eondition,.will propel the arrow forward. v
This toy may he manufactured at a small oost, and is preferable to a bow and arrow for small children.
What I claim as new, and desire to securdhy Letters Patent, is i The elastic cord B, attached to a. forked or other suitable bar A, andfthe notched arro'w C all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
' H. C. GRIFFIN.
