IMEROVED CAB-SEAT.
Ella fitlgdmlt rrfnoh In in flgrst firltn's grind and milling part ti figs same,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JESSE S. WHEAT, of South Wheeling, in the county of Ohio. and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful improvement in Railroad Car-Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of my improved reversible railroad car-seat frame.
Figure 2 is a view either front or back of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in railroad car-seats, and consists in certain devices for reversing and holding the back of a seat in dilferent positions of elevation and inclination to adapt itto the support and comfort of the person occupying the seat, instead of being confined to one position as reversible seats are of ordinary construction.
The general constructionand arrangement are similar to the cross-seats on both sides of a passage-way of a car in general use for the accommodation of two passengers each.
A represents the ends, B the bottom, and C the back of the seat. Similar devices are fitted at both ends of the seat for reversing the back and changing its position of elevation and inclination, as desired. The back C is connected with the ends A by a hingi'ng apparatus consisting of cross-head arms 1) which are pivoted at their ends to the centre of the ends of the seat at the points a, and at the middle of their cross-heads to the ends of the back at the points 6. The arms D have slotted links, 0, pivoted on the ends of their cross-heads, and in the ends of the back C are fixed guide-pins, d, which work in the slots of the links a, and regulate their movement. On the ends of the back C are fastened strong metal guard-plates, e, which lie over the arms D and the links 0 to protect and guide them when the back is reversed, and hold the back in position when elevated and inclined. At the bottom part of the ends A, on their inner sides, are fastened metal double-inelined racks.
E, having one, two, or more notches, g, in the inclines running from each side of the centre for receiving the ends of the guard-plates 0 when the back C is raised, in order to change its position of elevation and angles of inclination, as desired, for accommodating the occupant of the seat. It will beobserved that with this arrangement of the arms D and the slotted links a which connect the back C with the ends A, and the provision of the racks E for receiving the guard-plates e, and supporting them at different elevations, the back of the seat may be reversed at pleasure from front to back, and the angle of inclination changed to adapt it to the back of a passenger.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The cross-head arms D, and slotted links 0, in combination with the back of the seat" 0, and the ends A, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
' 2. The double-inclined racks E, in combination with theguide-plates e, arranged and operating as and for the purposes specified.
JESSE S. WHEAT,
Witnesses.
