Description

@animi FORTUNE L. BAILEY, or FREEPORT, INDIAN-A,
Letters Patent No. 84,789, lated Dcccmbe1"8, 1868.
IMPROVED CAR-MOVER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern ,Be it known that I, FORTUNE L. BAILEY, of Freeport, in the county of Shelby, in the State of Indiana,-
scription thereof, reference Ibeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
f The nature of my invention consists in the construetion of a machine, in order that one person may move a ear or engine from place to place upon the track with ease.
A To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to 4'describe its construction and operation.
The invention consists in a lever, A, connected with the clasp B by means of a bolt, forming a pivot at the clasp B, and allowing the lever to play freely up' and down.
The clasp B is attached to the car or engine to be moved, by means of the temper-screw F, and will hold the machine fast to the car or engine, so as to draw the machine with the car or engine, when the ear or engine is shoved fo1'ward. 4
The rods I I are attached to the lever A, by means .of jaws D D, which form the fulcruni.
On the lower ends of the rods I I are attached jaws E E, in which there are nippers or teethJ J that are self-'acting upon the rail by the weight of the lever, or any pressure, either down or to the rear, and which are always loose when desired to move .upon the rail, as, when the car or engine is in motion, and the lever is not worked, the jaws and nippers will slide upon the rail.
When the machine is desired to work, the rods :stand at an angle, say, of forty-iive degrees, more oriless, the lever is raised, and the rod and jaw that are in the rear, slide or step up to the one in front.
Then the lever is lowered, the one behind stands still and the one in front slides or steps forward, and so on they step or slide alternately, moving the car forward. p
Machines may be' constructed with but one rod and fulcrum, and work,'either with an upward or downward movement of the lever, and the jaws may have but one nipper or tooth. y
I do not claim the arrangement ofthe lever rods, and clamps, as such have been used before but What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A The arrangement 1of lever A, bars I I, and clamp B, when combined with the griping-devices on the lower ends of the rods I I, as and for the purpose set forth.
FORTUNE L. BAILEY.
