SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 652,778, dated July 3, 1900.

Be it known that I, DUDLEY AMERICUS JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union Mills, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Tool-Box, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tool-boxes in general, and more particularly to that class employed by carpenters for holding and carrying tools; and it has for its object to provide a construction comprising a movable attachment for holding auger-bits and in which the auger-receptacle will be held in position by means of a projection which is thrown into and out of operative position as the cover of one of the compartments of the box proper is raised and lowered.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which similar numerals of reference designate like and corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the complete device with the cover of the auger-receptacle raised. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section showing the positions of the parts with the several covers in place. holding box comprises a hollow base portion 5, the sides 6 and 7 of which converge up wardly at their upper edges and terminate in upwardly-extending projections 8 and 9,-having perforations 10, with which are engaged the inturned ends of a bail 11. This base 5 has two transverse partitions 12 and 13,which divide the inclosure of the base into major side compartments 14 and 15 and a minor central compartment 16, these partitions 12 and 13 terminating in line with the projections 8 and 9. 18 and 19, respectively, and which covers are hinged to .the upper edges of the partitions 12 and 13, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, these covers or lids being inclined inwardly in order that they may shed water. In the minor compartment 16 is removably disposed an auger-receptacle comprising a block 2O, which is adapted to fit snugly within said compartment and which projects above the upper edges of the partitions 12 and 13, as shown. This block 20 has a plurality of vertical cylindrical recesses 21 of various diameters and which are adapted to receive the angers or anger-bits. A'cover22 'is'provided for the block 20 and which cover has a downwardly-extending bead 23, which when the cover is upon the upper end of the block 20 incloses and rests uponthe upper portion of the outer surface ofthe block 20,

as shown in Fig. 2, the cover being'thus held against lateral displacement.

Vertical perforations are formed through the cover 22 and adjacent the ends thereof, and through these perforations are passed the arms 24 of a U-shaped bail, the web 25 of which lies above the cover and the ends of which are bent inwardly and are passed through perforations in metallic plates 26, which are secured to the ends of the block 20. As shown, the cover 22 is somewhat longer than the block 20, so that the bead 23 lies only against the side faces of the block, the end portions of the bead extending beyond the block.

In order to hold the block 20 removably Within the compartment 16, aslot 27 is formed through the partition 13, and through this slot projects a pin 28, which is driven into theinner edge of the lid or cover 19. When thelid 19 is in its lowered position, as shown in Fig. 2, the pin 28 projects into the compartment 16; but when the lid is raised the pin is withdrawn from the compartment. In the side faces of the block 20 are formed recesses 30 in order that the block may be placed at random in the compartment, and when thus placed one of the recesses will receive the pin 28. When the pinis in engagement with a recess, the block 20 cannot be Withdrawn, and thus the entire box may be carried from one place to another by grasping the web 25 of the bail, which is attached to the block 20.

When the block 20, with its connected parts, is removed from the compartment 16, the base portion 5 may be carried by means of the bail 11, at which time the compartment 16 may be used as a receptacle for tools, for nails, or for other articles.

It will of course be understood that each of the compartments 14 and 15 may be divided to fit them for the reception of special tools and that any desired material and proportions may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.

\Vhat is claimed is- 1. A tool-box comprising a base portion including a central compartment and a compartment at each side thereof, a supplemental box adapted to enter the central compartment and having recesses in its opposite faces, a lid for each of the side compartments having hinged connection with the main box or base, latches carried by each lid and adapted to engage their respective recesses in the supplemental box when the lids are lowered and disengage the recesses when the lids are raised, and means for carrying each box separately.

2. A tool-box comprising a base portion including a central compartment and a compartment at each side thereof, a supplemental box adapted to enter the central compartment and having recesses in its opposite faces, a lid for each of the side compartments having hinged connection with the base, pins carried by'the lids for engagement with the recesses of the supplemental box when the lids are lowered and adapted to disengage the recesses when the lids are raised, a bail engaged with the base, a bail engaged with the supplemental box, and a cover for the supplemental box, said cover having slidable engagement with the bail of its box.

3. A tool-box comprising a base portion divided into compartments, a supplemental holder adapted to enter one of the compartments, recesses in the supplemental holder, a lid for one of the compartments having a latch adapted to move into and out of engagement with a recess of the supplemental holder as the lid is lowered and raised, and a carrying-bail for the box.
