) HENRY LAMPSIONJOF LON-DON, ENGLAND. I Letters Patent No. 65,239, dated May 28, 1867.
.; urnovsmr Islam-Tm,
1 it: Stimuli refnrnhtsiu 1112 5: Zrflzri fittest no muting 1nd at it: mu.
7 TO ALL TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRYIAMPBON, of 64 Queen street, Cheapside, in the city of London, merchant, have invented improvements in connecting together the ends of iron' or other metal' bands used in baling cotton, wool, and other bale goods packed under pressure and I do hereby' declare thait the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. I g v The object of the improvements is to obtain asimple and eflicient connectionfor the ends of iron or other metal bands used in: baling cotton, wool, and other bills goods packed under pressure. For this purpose each metal band, according to the improvemert s, is provided with two flat loops, similar in form to the sliding loops of leather used with leather straps. One end of the band is passed through one of these loops, and turned back against itself on the inside thereof, or towards that surface to be next thebale, for some distance, say about four inches; This part may also be riveted,.wh en the end turned back may be shorter. The other loop is passed over the other end of the band, and when the band is applied to a bale this other end is passed L and drawn through the first loop, and turned short back again over it, when the second loop is slipped over this end, and thus acts as a capping and keeps this end in place. The ends of the bands will thus be securely connected together; t v i But that the invention may be'fully understood, I will, by the aid of the accompanying drawings, proceed to describe means pursued by me in carryingthe same into efl'ect.
'Desm 'pt1' m of the Drawings. Figure 1 shows an edge view; and i I Figure 2 a plan of portions of a band with parts thereof arranged according to my invention.-
Figure 3 shows an edge view, 1i plan view, and a section of one of the loops" separately. Figures 4 and 5 show on a small scale a side view and an end view of shale, with the bands according to my improvements applied to it; and
l Figure 6 shows one of the bands, also on a smnll'scale, folded in form suitable for stowage.
In' each of the views the same letters are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they 'occur. a is the band, the end a of which is first passedthrough a metal loop, 6 and this end is then turned back onthe inside thereof, or towards that surface of the band a next the halo, by which that end becomes firmly compressed so as to securely hold the loop I: but, if desired, the part a of the loop a so turned back may be rivetedtotho partu. The opposite end a of the band a is passed through another similar loop, 6', and that end a, when the band a is applied to a bole, is passed and drawn-through the loop 6, and then-turned back short over theloop b. The loop 6 is then slipped up over'the end a", and thus acts as a capping over that end a to keep it in its place. The parts will then assume the position indicated by figs. 1, 2, 4, and 5.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Seeuring the ends ofthe band atogether by passing the end a through the metal loop b, and turning the same back upon the inside of the said band, the opposite end a passing through the loop 6 and through the loop I), and turned back short over the outside of the loop 5 and inserted ago-iii in the loop I), and thelatter slipped up toward the loop 6, whenlnll are arranged and. operating substantially as her -in shown and described.
In witness wherepf I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of'two subscribing witnesses.
' I HENRY LAMPSON.
