VEHICLE-PO LE ATTACHMENT.

Be it known that I, THOMAS FoRsTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Ulm, in the county of Brown and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicle-Pole Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vehicle-pole attachments; and it has for its object to provide a device of this kind that can be cheaply manufactured, readily secured in position, and efficient in operation; and it consists in the improved construction and novel combination of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in each of the views in which they occur, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myinvention in use, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the front end or tip of the usual pole or tongue of a vehicle or machine, the tip of which is preferably reduced, as shown at 2, for the reception of my attachment 3. The attachment proper comprises a substantially cup-shaped or hollow casting, the rear end of which is provided with an opening 4 for the reception of a screw 5 or other fastening means, and the forward end is provided with a curved horn or hook 6, which projects forward toward the tip or point of the casting 7. Engaging with the horn 6 is a double ring 8, the upper opening of which is preferably elongated, as shown at 9, for the reception of the band 10 around the neckyoke 11. The band 10 is secured to the central portion of the neck-yoke, which is preferably slightly reduced or provided with the ordinary beads or projections (not shown) for holdingit in position. The ends of the band are formed into loops 12 and 13, respectively,
. which are passed through the elongated opening 9 in the ring 8 These loops are arranged to fit one within the other and are secured together by means of the bolts 14, which extend through registering holes therein and are riveted, so as to draw the band tightly around the neck-yoke.
In using my improved attachment by locating the horn on top of the casting to the rear of the tip the ring can be rested upon the tip and turned into its horizontal position to slip under the point of the horn by simply letting the Weight of the neck-yoke bear upon the ring after it has been placed upon the tip, whereby the tongue can be lifted with one hand and the ring 8 can be made to engage with the horn 6 with the other hand. By means of the pivotal connection between the ring 8 and the band 10 the ring can be moved nearly into a horizontal position for slipping the lower portion of it over the end of the born, after which it will'assume its normal position as the horn projects farther through it. As thus constructed it is evident that it will be impossible for the ring to be accidentally removed from the horn, as the ring must be returned to its horizontal position before it can be taken off the tip of the horn. This construction will avoid the necessity of havin g the tongue project sofar beyond the neckyoke, as must be done where the end of the tongue projects bodily through a large ring suspended from the neck-yoke, and it will also avoid the necessity of moving the neck-yoke so far forward to permit of the ring being passed over the end of the tongue in connecting the neck-yoke'or disconnecting it from the end of the tongue.
Although I have shown what I consider the best means of constructing my improved attachment, yet I reserve to myself the right to make such changes and modifications as .will come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a casting, the top of which is provided with an upwardly and forwardly extending curved horn to the rear of the tip of the casting, the tip of the horn projecting to the rear adjacent to the top of the casting, of a neck-yoke, and a ring piv otall y secured to the center thereof, whereby the ring may rest upon the-tip of the casting in front of the horn before it engages therewith, substantially as described.
