To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BRUCE A. WVATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorcroft, in the county of Crook and State of Wyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Neck- Yokes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to neck yokes, and more particularly to the class of safety neck okes.

y The primary object of the invention is the provision of a neck yoke wherein the same when connected with a pole or tongue may be freely moved vertically or horizontally, the ferrule or sleeve of the neck yoke being adapted to abut against a flange on the pole or tongue and be locked therewith, so as to avoid accidental detachment of the neck yoke on the unhooking of the trace 01 the breaking away of an animal hitched to the tongue or pole.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a neck yoke which is simple in construction, strong, durable, reliable and eflicient in its purpose, capable of being readily and easily mounted upon a draftpole or tongue and detached therefrom and when mounted thereon will be securely fas tened to avoid the accidental detachment and also one which may be manufactured at a minimum expense.

WVith these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings: Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a draft pole or tongue showing the neck yoke constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by numerals 5 designates a portion of a pole or tongue of the ordinary well-known construction, the same being formed near its outer end with the usual neck yoke abutment ring 6, against which engages the neck yoke when mounted upon the pole or tongue.

The neck yoke comprises a ferrule 01' sleeve 7 which is adapted to receive the outer end of the pole or tongue 5, whereby its inner or rear end will abut against the ring 6. Engaged in diametrically opposite points of the ferrule or sleeve are bolts 8, the heads thereof being counter sunk in the inner face of the said sleeve or ferrule, and these bolts 8 are adapted to form pivot connections for upper and lower bars 9 and 10 respectively of a yoke frame, the ends of the bars being brought together, and are riveted by the limbs 11 of U shaped eye members 12 which are permanently fastened thereto and are adapted to receive the collar straps of harness in the ordinary well-known manner. It will be noted that the sleeve or ferrule 7 is pivoted medially of and between the said bars 9 and 10 of the yoke, and in this man-,,

ner the latter may be horizontally swung upon said pivots 8 connecting the bars thereof to the sleeve or ferrule. Carried by the sleeve or ferrule 7 is a loop-like keeper 13, the ends of which are pivoted at 14 to the said ferrule or sleeve 7 whereby the keeper may be swung into locking engagement with the ring 6 on the pole or tongue or disengaged therefrom. The ends of the keeper are formed with bearing edges 15 and 16 respectively with either of which engages a spring arm 17 riveted at 18 to the ferrule or. sleeve 7 and in this manner the keeper 13 will be held disengaged from or engaged with the abutment ring 6, and when engaged with the latter the neck yoke will be prevented from becoming accidentally detached from the pole.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
