No. 472,314. Patented Apr. 5', v1892.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEF SCI-ILIOH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED CARRIAGE AND CRADLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,314, dated April 5, 1892. Application filed July 24, 1891. Serial No. 400,537- (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEF SGHLIOH, a subject of the Emperor-of Austria-Hungary, hav ing resided in the United States one year last past and declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Carriage and Cradle, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings. 7
My in vention relates to improvements in combined carriages and cradles; and it consists of means, substantially as described, connected with the body and frame of the runninggear for securing the said parts together in such manner as to permit their ready disengagement when desired.
It further consists of means readily attachable to portions of the carriage for supportin g the body thereof, so that it is raised above or free from the frame of the running-gear, thereby forming a cradle.
It further consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side view of a combined carriage and cradle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front end view of the body or cradle portion with supports. Fig. 3 represents a view of detached parts on an enlarged scale. Fig.4. represents a perspective view of a detached portion. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the running-gear and connected parts, the body of the carrier being in dotted lines. Fig. 6 represents a perspective View of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates-the sill of the running-gear of a childs carriage, adapted to support the body B between the lugs C, which are on opposite sides of the said sill.
The sill A is provided at its rear end with an eye D, adapted to receive a tongue E, which is on the rear of the body B and has in its front end an earF with an opening G therein, adapted to receive a depending eye H, secured to the front end of the body B. A catch J, secured to the sill A, has a nose which enters an opening in the said eye H and looks it in place, thus firmly securing the body B to the running-gear.
Secured to the handles K, which are at the rear of the carriage, are the socket-pieces L,
in which are inserted the lower ends of a standard M, having ahook N at its top for securing the chainsQ thereto, said chains being also secured to the rear ends of the body.
Attached to the sockets P on the reaches R is a standard S, having a hook T thereon, to which are connected the chains U, attached to the front end of the body. The said chains Q and U are of such length as to hold the bodyB suspended above the running-gear, so that the said body may be rocked, thus being adapted to serve as a cradle.
The manner of converting the device from a carriage to a cradle, and vice versa, is readily apparent, being simple and easy of accomplishment.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the sockets L and P are transferred from handles K and reaches R to the sill A without, however, producing different results.
In lieu of. the chains Q and U, I may employ cords, rods, or other suitable means of suspending the carriage-body above the running-gear.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined carriage and cradle, the combination of a sill with lugs on its opposite sides, an eye on its rear end, and an ear with opening in its front end, a body with a tongue on its rear end and a depending eye secured to its front end, and a catch secured to the sill and having a nose adapted to enter said depending eye, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combined carriage and cradle, sockets secured to the handle, sockets secured to the swinging gear, standards removably fitted in said sockets and each having a hook at top, a body with means for securing it at front and rear ends to the running-gear, and chains connectible with said hooks and said body for swinging it above the running-gear, said parts being combined substantially as described.
JOSEF SOHLIOH.
