JOHN G. ERNST, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
. Letters Patent No. 65,188, dated Zlfay 28, 1867.
TOBACCO-POUCH.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it linoivu that I, JOH N'G. ERNST, of the city ofBaltiuiore', and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful improvement in Tobacco-Pouches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the some, reference being had to the drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, in whieh-- I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pouch, and represented as attached to a smoking pipe.
Figure 2 shows the frame of the pouch drawn out or enlarged, and a portion of the bag broken out to show the position of the nipple. I
Figure 3 shows the frame when close-ll.
Figure 4 is the nipple detached from the pouch; and
Figure 5 is the mouth of the pouch when open.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a tobacco-pouch with an opening and shutting device so arranged that it may be applied to a smoking pipe for the'purpose of filling or loading it. It'consists, further, in a spring arrangement, which when properly attached to the pouch will allow its mouth to be enlarged for the purpose of accommodating different-sized pipes, and by its contraction the frame and pouch will be hold fast to the rim of pipe. Lastly, it consists in nipple fastened inside the pouch, and near the mouth of it, for the purpose of ramming the tobacco into the pipe.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The metallic frame B is composed-of two sections, a ll, similar to frames of porte-monuaies. The hinge d d of the part a is elongated, forming a slot, and allowing the frame B to be drawn out or enlarged. Small holes I) b b are punched or drilled all around the outside edge of frame-B for the purpose of securing rubber spring (l and 'bag or pouch A thereon. The spring C is put on in such manner as to confine the frame B to the seat of its hinges. Nipple E, made of wood or other suitable material, is put on the inside of bag A. The base of thenipple is made concave and corresponding with the convex side of the metal plate I), which goes on the outside of bug A and directly opposite nipple E. Said plate Dis either screwed or riveted to the nipple E, and the bag A is held firmly between plate 1) and nipple E. I
It is used in the following manner: Open the frame of pouch A and fill the pouch with tobacco; then attach it to the pipe, (see fig. 1.) The monthof pouch ought to be of corresponding size with the bowl of the pipe. The party of the frame fitting over the hinge of pipe, the lid being open, then allow the tobacco to descend into the bowl and fill itnearly; then insert the thumb in the concaved plate D, and with fore-finger raise the edge of the bag next to plate D and ram the tobacco home. When the pipe is loaded hold it in a. reversed position while yet on the pouch, and allow any loose tobacco to fall back into the pouch; then take it off and close it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The elongated hinges d d of frame 13, in combination with spring 0 or its equivalent, the concaved metal plate D, and nipple E, the whole secured to bag or pouch A, in the manner described and for the purpose specified.
