To ALL WHoM rr MAY cono-EBN:
Bc it known that I, JOIIN CARROLL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Bath-Tub; und I do hereby declare that thc following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', whichwill enable others skilled in the art to make-and use the same, reference being'had tothe accompanying drawings forming part of thisspccific'ation, in whichv Figure 1 represents a. vertical cross-section `of my improved bath-tub Figure 2 is n. longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is 'to constructs. bath-tub of sheet metal' and wood, ,i-n such a manner that it will be durable, light, und easily packed for transportation' v *I i The bath-tubs now generally Vmadcrof sheet metal and wood, s re made square on the outside, vthe bottom ofthe metal being almost lat. The wood-work was thick and heavy, and when thse tubs were to be packed for transportation they would occupy a very large room. I haveovercome these diii'culties by making the bottom oi'- the sheet metal halfcircular, orneurly so. The head and foot-rest can then be easily soldered to the main part, using double searujoints for the purpose. I then cover the outside of the tub with a layer of ery thin wood, which is made either inl one or more pieces, and which conforms completely to the shape ofthe metal; so that the outside of the ,tub is also half circular. The tubs can in this'shape be set together, one within the other, so that when packed for transportation twelve (12) of' these tubs will occupy no more room than two of thc common ones. Provision is'made for carrying o' t'he`overilowng and waste-water.
A represents a tub,.made of sheetlnetul, of any suitable description, and provided with a half circular, or nearly so, bottom, us shown in iig. 1. It is mudo of vthree pieces, a, and c; a being the head-rest, b the foot-rest, and c the body of ,the tub. ',lhcthree pieces are double seemed, and then soldered together iu'any suitablefway, being 'formed en a block of suitnble shape. B is. a. layer of-thin wood, luid around A, as shown, so that the shape of the outside of the tub is like that of the inside. The wood may be as thin as a veneer, and is out or shaved from any suitable kind of tree. Thepfu'rt enclosing the body c may be made of one or more pieces, us well as vthat which Aencloscs a. The joints are glued together, -or otherwise made secure und water-tight. Outside of the vertical foot-rest Z is arranged n. board, C', which is heavier than the rest of the wooden casing. d is a. hole in the upper part of thc'foot-rcst Zifor ,the purpose of carrying off the water when the same rises too high in the tub. The board C is provided with c. groove, e, which connects the hole d with the wasteV pipe f, which is' arranged at the bottom of the pan, as shown in fig'. 2. The upper edge of this tub is or may be strengthened by a lining, g, of sheet metal, or any 'other suitable material,` as shown in the drawings. Supports D D may be arranged at the bottom of the tubwhen the suine is to be letup. For packing, the same should not be on the tub, and the same will then be enabled to be set one -into another, as is indicated by red lines in iig. 2. The tub may be strengthened by laying metal or wooden bands around the wood-work at suitable distances but when required, they may be omitted.4
I claim as new, and desire to secure by' Letters Patent- 1. The bath-tub, consisting of the body c, with a half circular bottom, head-rest a,und foot-rest b, all composed of sheetmetul, and surrounded by c. layer, B, of thin wood, in such n manner :1s to conform to the shape of the inside of the tub, the wooden foot-board C; adjustable support D, and metallicA lining g, substnntially as herein shown and described. Y
2. The thin covering B of wood, Whcnlaid around the body of4 a bath-tub, with semici'reular bottom, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
