COFFIN-IHANDLE.
summaries forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,437, dated June 12, 1900.
Application 518a February 9,1900. Serial No. 4,617. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ULRIO HEBERT,a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing'at Black River, county of Arthabaska, Province of Quebec, Canada, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffin-Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following-is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to handles for coffins; and one object is to provide a removable coffin-handle which can be quickly and easily attached to and detached from the coffin and which can be readily adjusted to fit anysized coffin.
A further object is to provide a coffin-han dle which is simple in construction, effective in operation, and can be manufactured at a moderate cost.
To these ends the invention consists in a removable and adjustable coffin-handle constructed substantially as hereinafter illustrated and described, and defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a coffin-handle constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, showing in dotted lines the position assumed by the parts when in their closed position. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, Av represents a coffin-handle, which may be of any preferred shape or material and suitably ornamented, as desired. Upon the body portion of the handle are socured two outwardly-extending arms a, on the lower part. of each of which are formed the downwardly-depending lugs a a In suitable bearings formed in the lugs a is journaled the cross-bar a having a groove a? formed centrally on its side, which is wide at its inner portion, forming a guideway. On the side of the cross-bar or opposite the groove a is secured a lug of, having in its upper end a removable pin a. Pivotally connected to each of the lugs a is a link M, in each of which is formed a series of perforations a Pivotally connected to the links a by means of pins a are the links 19, which are pivotally conis secured a hook I).
nected to a cross-piece B, to each end of which Centrally arranged in the cross=piece B is a shallow groove o in which is adapted to slide the vertically-adjust'able gripping-bar B, the body portion of which is engaged by and slides in the guideway a of the cross-bar a and is provided with perforations 5 with any one of which the pin a is adapted to engage and lock the bar B in its adjusted position. Secured to the upper side of the cross-piece B is the guide rod B which lies upon and slides against the front face of the bar B and is guided in the groove a and held against the bar B by means of the strap 17". v
The adjacent faces of the gripping bar B and the hooks b are provided with suitable pins b which prevent the parts from accidentally slipping off the coffin. v
The parts having been adjusted by means of the pins and perforations to fit the coffin with which the handles are to be used, the handle A is placed in its lowered position, (see Fig. 2,) when the gripping parts are separated to their fullest extent. The hooks and gripping-bar B are then fitted over the edges of the coffin and the handle raised to its highest position, whereupon the coffin will be tightly clamped and cannot become disengaged without first lowering the handle.
While I have herein shown a preferred form of carrying my invention into effect, yet I do not desire to limit myself to such preferred details of construction, but claim the rightto use any and all modifications thereof which will serve to carry into effect the objects to be attained by this invention in so far as such modifications and changes may fall within the spirit and scope of my said invention.-
I claim- 1. Ahandle for coffins, comprising ahandle having outwardly-extending arms; a crossbar journaled in said arms; a gripping-bar slidably mounted in said cross-bar and adapted to be locked in its adjusted position; a
cross-piece adjustably connected with said arms; and gripping-hooks formed at each end of the said cross-piece, substantially as described.
2. A handle for coffins, comprising a handle having outwardly-extending arms 5 an outer IOC of the said cross-piece; and a guide-rod cen trally secured to said cross-piece and adapted to lie upon and slide along the said gripping-bar, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ULRIC HEBER'F.
