Be it known that I, JOHN ANDREW Me- GARRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Oook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Pulley, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to devices for handlingllumbernsuch, for instance, as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States No. (301,043, granted to me on March 22, 1808.

The object of the invention is to provide a nenr and improved pulley or guide arranged for convenient attachment to the side of a pile of lumber to guide the hoistingrope and tohold it in proper position relatively to the actuating power on the ground and the lumber-handling device above referred to and lo# cated on the top of the pile.

The invention consists ot' novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The improved pulley or guide consists, essentially, of a bracket A and a pulley B, of which the bracket A is provided with a bracket-plate A', having elongated slots A2 at its ends, each of the slots being engaged' by a hook-bolt O, extending transversely between adjacent pieces in the pile of lumber D, as is plainly illustrated in Figs. l and 2, the inner or hook ends O of said hook-bolt engaging the inner edges of the corresponding pieces of lumber. By this arrangement the bracket A can be readily secured to the face of a pile of lumber by passing the bolts O transversely between adjacent pieces of lumber and then turning the bolt-s so as to engage the hook ends O with the inner edges of adjacent boards or pieces, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 2, the operator 'then screwing the nuts on the outer ends ot1 the bolts, so as to firmly hold the bracket in position on the face of the pile of lumber.

On the bracket-plate A', near the middle thereof, are bolted or otherwise secured thc' forwardlyextending bracketarms A, in which are mounted to turn vertically-disposed trunnions B', projecting from the to'p and bottom of a pulley-bearing B2, carrying a pulleyshaft B3, on which a groovcd pulley B is secured, preferably within the sides of said bcaring B2, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings. By the arrangement described the pulley B has a swivel connection with the bracket A, so that the hoisting-rope E in passing around the pulley can readily turn the same on the vertically-disposed trunnions, according to the sidewise pull on the hoisting-rope by the horse or other power used in manipulating the hoisting-rope to pull up the lumber to the top of the pile,as more fully described and illustrated in the patent above referred to.

By the construction set forth the bracket A can be readily attached to any part of a pile of lumber and the pulley proper is at all times in the desired position on the bracket to receive the hoisting-rope and insure a proper Working of the lumber-handling de vice referred to and described in the patent mentioned. It is further evident that by having elongated slots and attaching-bolts the entire device may be readily adjusted in a vertical direction to bring the lower or l1orizontal part of the hoisting-rope in proper position relatively to the animal, so that the lower portion of the rope extends as near as possible in a horizontal direction to insure a proper pulling by the animal on the rope when it is desired to hoist a load of lumber to the top of a pile. It will also be readily seen that the device can be quickly detached from its position on the pile or removed to another part thereof or to another pile and be secured in position in the manner described. Although the pulley is described and shown as applied to lumber-handling devices, it is evident that it may be used for other pur poses.
