THOMAS JEFFERSON MANOILL, OF MABEN, MISSISSIPPI COLTER-BAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,380, dated February 1, 1898.
Application filed August 4, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS Jnnnnason MANCILL, of Maben, in the county of Oktibbeha and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Oolter-Band, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a colter-band of simple, durable, and economic construction and which may be fastened to a plow-beam without drilling holes in the beam or weakening the beam in any manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a colter-band which may be attached to beams of different thicknesses in an expeditious and convenient manner and whereby the colter may be adjusted to the right or to the left or vertically to suit the operator and held fixedly in its adjusted position.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a plow and a side elevation of the colterband and colter attached to the beam of the plow. Fig.2 is a side elevation of the colterband drawn on an enlarged scale and attached to the plow-beam, a portion of the band being in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the colterband and a portion of the plow-beam, the shank of the colter being in section and a portion of the band being broken away; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the plowbeam, the colter-band being shown in side elevation.
The colter-band consists of two side pieces 10, connected at top and bottom by cross-bars 11, the side pieces 10 being diagonally arranged With reference to the top and bottom cross-bars. The top and bottom cross-bars 11 at their right-hand ends are provided with projections 12, and in each of said projections a horizontal elongated slot 13 is made.
Each slot 13 receives the threaded end of a hook-bolt 14, the hook-section of the upper bolt facing to the front and the hook-section of the lower bolt facing to the rear. The
Serial No. 647,046. (No model.)
cross-bars of the colter-band engage, respectively, with the top and the bottom portions of the plow-beam A, and the space between the side pieces 10 of the colter-band is greater than the combined thickness of the plow-beam and the shank B of the colter. The shank of the colter is engaged near its upper end by the hook portion of the upper hook-bolt and near its lower end by the hook portion of the lower hook bolt. The colter bears against the front face of the upper cross-bar of the band and the rear face of the lower cross-bar of said band, as shown in the draw mgs.
A set-screw 16 is passed through the righthand side of the colter-band to an engagement with the shank B of the colter.
Under this construction of colter-band it is evident that said band may be secured readily to plow-beams of different thicknesses, and that the shank of the colter may be laterally shifted by moving the bolts in the elongated slots and placing wedges or blocks between the colter-shank and the plow-beam. It is further obvious that the colter-shank may be vertically adjusted, and that the set screws and the hook-bolts will hold the shank of the colter in any position in which it may have been adjusted. The set-screw likewise serves to bind or secure the colter-band on the beam, the saidset-screw pressing against the shank of the colter and the shank of the colter having bearing against the beam of the plow. Each of the hook-bolts is provided with a suitable nut at its threaded end.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A colter-band consisting of a top and a bottom bar and side bars arranged diagonally to the top and bottom bars, connecting the same, the top and the bottom bars being respectively provided at one end with an extension having an elongated opening therein, hookbolts passed through said openings, and a setscrew passed through one of the side pieces of the said colter-band,v for the purpose set forth. i
2. A colter-band'consisting of a top and a bottom bar and side pieces connecting said top and bottom bars, being arranged diago nallythereto, the space between the side pieces being greater than the width of the plow- -beam to which the band is to be secured, each top and bottom bar-being provided at one end with a horizontal elongated slot, hookbolts, the shanks whereof are passed through the said slots and provided with suitable nuts, the hooks of the bolts facing in opposite directions, and a clamping device carried by the side piece of the band adjacent to the said hook-bolts, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a plow-beam, of a colter-band consisting of a top and a bottom bar engaging respectively with the top and bottom. of the plow-beam, and side beams connecting the top and bottom bars and arranged diagonally thereto, the space between the side bars of the band being greater than the thickness of the beam, each top and bottom bar being provided near one end with a horizontal elongated slot, a colter-shank engaging with the beam and with the top and bottom bars of the band, hook-bolts engaging with the front and rear edges of the colter-shank, locking devices for the said hookbolts, and a set-screw extending through a side of the said band to an engagement with the said colter-shank, for the purpose specified.
