SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 649,462, dated May 1 5, 1900. Application filed Gotcha-27,1899. Serial No. 734,980. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ADOLFO VICTOR LA- DEN, a citizen of France, residing at No. 1212 Calle Piedad, and ROQUE CARLOS DOMINGO ()RTELLI, a subject of the King of Italy, re-' siding at No. 884 Oalle Europa, Buenos Ayres, Argentina, have invented a new and useful Box Made of a Single Piece, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a box for inclosing matches, lozenges, wafers, or other like articles made of pasteboard or other convenient material by means of a novel and simple construction from a single piece.

In the accompanyingdrawings we have represented the successive steps necessary for the production of the boxes embodying our invention, in which- Figure 1 represents the sheet from which the box is to be constructed, in which the lines which are to be out are continuous and those to be folded are dotted. Fig. 2 shows the same sheet after the necessary cuts and folds have been made for the formation of the hollow end walls. Fig. 3 represents the same after the folding of the parts designed to form the inner sides of the hollow side walls. Fig. at represents the same after the next step has been taken in the construction, consisting of wrapping the rest of the sheet around the walls thus'formed; and Figs. 5 and 6 represent views in perspective of the finished box, respectively closed and open. In Figs. 7, 8, and 9 a variation of the form of the box of our invention is represented, in which Fig. 7 represents the sheet marked to represent the cuts and folds, Fig. 8 represents the same after the hollow walls have been formed, and Fig. 9 is aview in perspective of the finished The construction is effected as follows: The hollow walls of the ends of the box are formed by doubling the pieces M, Fig. 1, upward, making the folds d e g h all in the same direction and at right angles, so that the outer face of the part A, included between the letters d and Z, is placed in contact with the inner face of the part m h, which latter is then folded upward at right angles on the line 2' 7., thus forming the hollow walls indicated by heavy lines in Figs. 2 and 3. The two parts B B are then folded upward at right angles on the lines jj to form the inner sides of the hollow side walls, folding them also on the lines 70in order to form the supports of the said sides, thus forming also the opening in the upper side of the box. At this stage the sheet will have the appearance shown in Fig. 3. The formation of the box is concluded by wrapping the parts 0 D around the walls formed as above described, the part 0 constituting the bottom and the part D the cover, respectively, of the box, for which purpose the creases or folds f c l) are all made to bend in the same direction and that of a to bend in the opposite direction in order to furnish the box with a sort of hinged cover, which is then provided with as trip of india-rubber which passes through the slots 0 and is fastened at its extremes in any convenient manner in the perforations 2. This elastic strip serves as a sort of spring-latch to hold the lid closed or open, as the case may be.

In some cases it is desirable to make the opening of the top of the box at one side, leaving in the other a stationary partial cover for the purpose of forming a support for one end of the matches, for example, which the box contains, to effect which we construct the box in the form indicated in Figs. 7, 8, and 9. This construction is identical with the former, with the exception of the wall formed by the piece N, (shown in the lower part of Fig. 7,) which is formed in the following manner: The said piece N is folded at right angles on the dotted lines 1) q r u o w in the same direction as the folds of the part III; but the folds on the lines 8 and tare in the opposite direction. The end part 19 y is then folded over, so that its outer face comes in contact with the inner face of the end part .2, after which the piece is folded upward at right angles on the line :0 :r. In this manner a part of the hollow wall of the box is formed, which includes the wall of one end, the two angles thereof, and those parts of the side walls embraced between the said angles and the walls of the top opening of the box. Proceed then with the construction exactly in the same manner as in the former.

Although the box of our invention is usually made of pastcboard and of a size appropriate for matches, lozenges, wafers, &c., it is understood that it may be varied as regards its size and material according to the uses for which it may be designed. It isalso understood that the two end walls may be made in the form indicated by N in the lower part of Fig. 7, leaving a partial stationary cover on both sides of the opening instead of only on one side, if it should be found desirable to do so.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A box composed of the parts 13, O, D, and lateral strips M, said lateral strips being bent to form the end walls and the part B having cut-out portions whichv are bent to form the side walls, in connection with the parts 0, D, which are wrapped around the body of the box formed by the ends-and sides.

2. A box composed of the parts B, O, D, and the part M, said part M being creased at d, e, g, h, and folded to form the end wall, the part 13 having cut-out portions bent to form parts of the hollow side walls and the parts 13, G, D, being creased at 70, 7n; n, 'n; f, f; c, c; b, b; and a, a respectively, substantially as described:

3. A box having hollow walls composed of folded side strips and of parts out out of the body of the blank and top and bottom portions connected by intermediate portions forming the outer parts of the hollow sides, all of said parts being formed in one piece, substantially as described.

4. A box comprising a hollow wall composed of a bent side strip and top and bottom portions, said strip being severed from the side of the blank and being bent transversely in relation to its length, substantially as described.

5. Abox comprising a hollow wall formed of bent portions which are cut out from within the body of the material and bent portions cooperating therewith and bottom and top portions, substantially as described.

6. A box comprising a hollow wall at one end, a hollow wall at the other end which latter is extended along each side part way thereof, hollow walls completing the sides of the box, said box having an opening in its top to one side of the same leaving at the other side a stationary portion, a cover and a bottom, substantially as described.

7. A box comprising hollow end walls, each formed of bent side strips, one end wall having extensions along each side, cut-out portions bent to form parts of the side walls, and the parts 0 and D forming the top and bottom with portions completing the side walls, substantially as described.
