Patented Dec. 2, w1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARTON FOR SINK FRAMES Application May 22, 1950, Serial No. 163,492`
This invention relates to a carton and more particularly to a carton for packaging a sink frame.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a simple, inexpensive and easily fabricated carton for a sink frame or the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a carton for a sink frame or the like which may be formed of a single sheet of suitable paper board.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a carton for a sink frame which may be easily applied to the sink frame so as to enclose and completely protect the same.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a carton for a sink frame which is foldable about a sink frame to form a frame-like carton.
The carton for sink frames and the like disclosed herein is particularly adapted for the packaging of rectangular sink frames which are metallic frames of appropriate cross section usually formed of extruded aluminum and highly polished. The sink frames are generally of rectangular shape and require protective packaging for shipping and handling. The carton for sink frames disclosed herein meets the several objects of the invention in that a rectangular sink frame can be positioned thereon and the carton easily and quickly folded to enclose the four sides of the frame in a manner rmly positioning the frame in the enclosure and forming a shipping package only slightly thicker than the frame and of a frame-like shape which facilitates handling and shipping. A
With the foregoing vandvother objects in view which will appear as 'the vdescription proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a paper board blank from which the sink frame carton is formed.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the carton in unfolded form illustrating a sink frame in position thereon.
Figure 3 is a plan View of the sink frame carton partially folded over the sink frame.
Figure 4 is a plan View of the carton completely folded over the sink frame.
4 Claims. (C1. 20G- 46) Figure 5 is a side view of the sink frame carton illustrated in Figure 2 showing portions thereof partially folded in place with respect to a sink frame thereon.
Figure 6 is a side View taken on line 6--6 of Figure 3.
Figure '7 is a cross sectional elevation of a frame.
By referring to the drawings and Figure 1 in particular it will be seen thata sink frame carton has been disclosed and comprises ablank section of suitable paper board or the like, the same comprising a rectangularbody I0 having end sections or panels I I and I2 defined by transversely extending crease lines I3 and I4 andeach of the end sections or panels II and I2 having end tabs I5 and I6 formed therefrom and adapted to be folded thereover on creaselines Il and I8, respectively, the panels II and I2 each being provided with parallel slits Il*i and |23, respectively, at the ends of the tabs I5, I6, said slits with the folding of the tabs I5, I6 inwardly providing recesses extending inwardly from the outer side edges of panels I I and I2 intermediate the ends thereof. The center section of the rectangular body I0 has an H-shaped cut defining front side and back side flaps I9 and 20 and adapted to be folded forwardly and backwardly on crease lines 2I and 22.
By referring now to Figure 2 of the drawings the blanked sink frame carton may be seen with a sink frame 23 in position thereon.`
By referring to Figure 5 of the drawings it will be observed that the end sections or panels I I and I 2 have been folded inwardly upon the crease lines I3 and I4 with the end tabs I5 and IIS also folded inwardly so that the tabs I5 and I6 move into position underlying thesink frame 23 while the end sections II and I2 overlie the sink frame 23 and particularly the end sections 24 thereof.'
In Figure 3 of the drawings a plan view `of the frame showing the folded end sections II and I 2 and the folded end tabs I5 and I 6 may be seen, it being observed that arrows in Figures 1 and 3 indicate the direction of fold of these sec'- tions II, I2, I5 and I6.
In Figure 6 of the drawings a side view on line E-B of Figure 3 shows the sections in foldedpo-` sition with the frame 23 and the side sections 24 thereof completely enclosed by the end tabs I5 and I6 and the end sections II and I2.
In Figure 4 of the drawings the fronst side and back side flaps I9 and 20 are shown folded outwardly over the remaining portions of the frame 23, it being observed that portions of the sink end sections II and I2 are covered by the flaps I9 and 20 and these overlapping sections provide convenient stapling areas by means of which the carton is held in assembled position about the sink frame. It will thus be seen that when the end sections II and I2 with their integrally formed end tabs I5 and i6 are turned inwardly, the frame 2;3 and particularly the end sections 24 thereof are enclosed by the carton and that the subsequent outturning of the aps I9 and holds the end sections II and I2 in folded position. The finished carton as shown in Figure 4 is therefore of a frame-like form with an open center section and withdouble fron-t and back side sections formed by the rectangular body I0 and the flaps I S and 20, the end sections being doubled along their outer edge and of triple thickness along their inner edge.
The sink frame 23 is securely positioned in the 'completed carton as the inturned end tabs I5 and Iprevent endwise movement as do the inturned end sections or panels II and I2. Sidewardmovement is prevented by the outturned flaps I9 and 20 and the frame is thus securely lpositioned well Iwithin the protectivel area of the carton away from the corners thereof'which might be damaged in shipment and is thus afforded the protection necessary.
In Figure '7 of the drawings a typical cross sectional illustration of a sink frame is shown, it' being obvious that Various cross sectional shapes of 'sink frames may be packaged in the carton and adequately protected thereby.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;
