PArENr OFFICE,

Application filed Deoeniberhl, 18,99- Serial No. 741,147. mammal.)
To all whom inlay-concern;-
Be it known that I, ARON HERZOG, a subject of the Grand Duke of Hesse, residing at Osthofen, in the Grand'Duohy of Hesse, Ger- 7 many, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in packing cases or IO boxes, and more particularly to the meansfor securing the lids thereof, the invention hav' ingfor its object to provide asi'mple and inexpensive boxthe lid of whichmay be quickly and efiectively secured in place or removed I 5 with equal facility without injury to the same.
or to the box, 1 With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrange ment of parts hereinafter morefully described. 1
In the accompanying drawings, forming a a part of this specification, and in which like letters and numerals of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevaz 5 tion of vaibogx embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line a: w of Fig. 2.
It is very desirable in shipping goods, es-
0 pecially from one country to another, that they be packed in a box or case vfrom which the lid may be easily removed by customs I ofiicials, so that the contents of the box may be inspected and this without the necessity 5 of destroying or injuring the lid or the boxbody, and all of these requirements are fulfilled by a box constructed in the manner which will now be described with greater particularity.
Referrin g to the draw'ingsi A designates the box-body, which may bef'o'f any desired dimensions andconstructed in any suitable manner, the said b.oxbod y, as shown, comprising the sides 1 1, ends 2 2, andbottom 3.
The lid B of the box is adapted to fit within and close the open top of the box-body, andin order to regulate the extent to which the lid is permitted to enter the box and bring the upper face of theli-d flush with the upper.
edges of the sides 1 and ends 2 combined guide and bearing bars 4 are employed. These bars are arranged near opposite endsof the lid B and extend transversely across these-me, with their ends projecting beyond its longig itudinal edges in position to overhang and rest upon the upper edges of the box-body sides to support the lid.
Extendinglongitudinallythrough the bars 4 from points near-each end thereof are chamnels 5, which run fromthe upper faces .of the bars through the sa-me'in a general inclined direction to the extreme .ends of the bars.
Secured in any suitable manner to the side and bottom of the box-body A are continuous guide-strips 7. The side guide-strips extend from the upper edges of the box-body sides to the lower edge of the box, and the lower strips extend from one side edge of the .bot-
tom to the Othemthereby bringing the ends of the bottom and side strips at right angles to each otherlamil in difierentplanesr Each-- of the guide-strips T7 is provided with a longitudinal opening or channel 8, which extends from one end of the strip to the other, and the side and bottom strips 7 at each end of the box, as well as thebar-4, are arranged in the same transverse vertical plane in order to bring the mouth-sot the openings of adjacent'bars in close 'proximit In practice when it isidesired to secure the lid B in place a cord .or wire 9 is run through the channels 8 of the strips 7, and its ends are carried through the channels 5 of :the cross-bar 4 and brought together above and centrally of the length of the same, when they are securely tied, and in order torenderit possible to detect whether the .box has been opened in transit aseal 1-0 may be applied to the extreme ends .of'the securing-cords.
By thus constructing a box it will be apparent that the securing-cords are not only protected by the covering and guide strips, but that said strips hold the cords in place and prevent their being slipped from the ends of the box. It will be obvious ,too, that the lid of the box may be quickly adjusted and secured in its closed position and that the lid may be removed expeditiously with-- out danger of injuring the same...
' Without limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement shown, I .cla'imas my invention- 7 1. In a'box, the combination with the main body having channeled guide-strips extendadapted to enter and close the open top of the box and said cross-bars having openings the box thesaid lid being provided with crossextending from their ends to the upper face 15 bars having openings extending from their thereof, substantially as described.
5 ends'to the upper faces thereof, snbstantialiy' In testimony whereof I have signed my as described. v name to this specification in the presence of 2. In acbox the combination with the main two subscribing witnesses. bod having channeled gmdestr1ps extend- ARON HERZOG ing around its sides and bottom and a lid i adapted to overhztngand engage the sides of ing around its sides and'bottom and slid :0 adapted to enter and close the open top of Witnesses:
the box, the said lid being providedwith cross- J ACOB ADRIAN, bars, the ends of which project and are ALBERT'MOAPEN.
