CANDLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,208, dated April 24, 1900. Application filed January 20, 1898. Renewed February 15, 1900. Serial No. 5,381- (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS O. HoWnLL, J 11., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to devices employed for illuminating purposes, particularly by means of candles, and has for its object the provision of a simple, cheap, and effective candle-holder provided with an everpresent means of igniting the candle.
To attain the desired end, myinvention consists, essentially, in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, at line a; 00 of Fig. 2, through the cover portion of the device.
Similar numerals of reference wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
1 is the body of the holder, preferably made of transparent material and of a size sufficientl y large to receiveand completely inclose a candle and its flame when burning, so as to protect the flame from drafts of air. The holder may, however, be made in different sizes to receive candles of various shapes and dimensions.
2 is a top made of metal and either hinged to the body 1, as at 3, or made to lift therefrom. This top 2 is provided with a bottom 4 and a sliding or movable cover 5, thus formin gareceptacle-formatohes. 6 are serrations against which the match may be struckfor igniting it.
7 is a candle, which may be simply placed withinthe holder 1 or confined within a ring 8, as desired.
When constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, my invention will be found admirably adapted to the uses and purposes for which it is intended. It is an article of ornament and decoration, as well as possessing great utility. It is intend ed for placing in bed-rooms,near hospital-cots, or in any position where a light may be re-' quired at a moments notice and in easy reach of a bed-ridden person or invalid, requiring only the throwing back of the cover, striking a match, and the ignition of the candle.
' Having now fully described my invention,- what I claim as new therein, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a transparent holder for a candle of a size, relative to the candle, sufficiently large to receive the candle and the flame thereof, when burning, whereby the flame is below the top edge of the holder, and is thereby shielded from drafts of air, a rim secured to the upper edge of said transparent holder, and a box-like cover for the candle-holder hinged to the said rim, the said cover being formed with an opening on'one side, whereby access may be had to its interior to permit the insertion and removal of matches, and a slide or cover closing the said opening, the said slide or cover being exposed when the box-like cover is turned back to open the candle-holder, substantially as set forth.
