BUCKLE FOR HARNESS.

Specification ofLetters Patent No. 6,477, dated May 22, 1849.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, the undersigned, HIRAM ToDD, of the city of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a nenT and useful Improvement in a Buckle, called the Safety Buckle for Harness, &c., of which t-he following is a full and eXact description.

My buckle is composed of three parts as represented in the accompanying drawing, by the Figures 3, 4L, 5. The whole buckle, when put together, is represented in the same drawing by Fig. 2.

The said three parts represented in the drawing as aforesaid, are described and designated as follows: First, the frame of the buckle (Fig. 4,) is like the frame of a commonsquare three-quarter buckle, except one-third lighter, and the round bar on which the tongue turns, projects one-half its size on the under side of the same, as is represented in said Fig. 4, letter D. This projection makes that bar twice as thick as the rest of the buckle frame, and should be round. Second, the safety plate (Fig. 8,) is the same width of the buckle frame, and ive-eighths of an inch longer, and nearly one-sixteenth of an inch thicker. It has a loop hole (Fig. 3, 0,) about three-siXteenths of an inch from the outer end of the plat Said loop hole is of the size of the strap that I wish to pass through it-as represented in Fig. l, of said drawing. The bar of the loop hole nearest the buckle should be rounded on the upper side of the plate, and the bar at the end of the plate should be rounded in like manner on the under the strap passing through it. So much of the bar at the other end of the plate, as lies within the clear of the buckle frame, projects above the face of said plate the thickness of the frame, and is hollowed out on the end so that the hollowedlpart forms a half circle of the size to fit neatly the round bar of the frame. Third, the tongue (Fig. 5,) is made like a common buckle tongue. except one-third smaller. It is now put together, by placing the round bar of the buckle frame, within the hollowed bar of the safety plate, and passing the tongue around both of said bars, (Fig. 2, B,) which thus fastens the said plate and buckle frame together, and completes the safety buckle. It is then used as is represented in Fig. l, in said drawing, letter A, representing thc strap used.

My safety buckle is varied in size to suit the various places where needed-but always keeping the same proportions as above specified. This buckle should be made of iron or brass.

What- I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A The safety plate', buckle frame and tongue combined together in the manner, and for the purposes set forth in the accompanying drawing and specification.
