ADJUSTABLE MACHINE-COVER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 645,964, dated March 27, 1900.
Application filed April 24, 1899. Serial No. 714,259. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I,WILLIAM B. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wallace, in the county of Fountain, State. of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machine-covers; and the object thereof is to so construct the same that it will act as a protection to the machine at all times and for the protection of workmen employed in connection with the machine.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like symbols of reference represent corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention with the parts adjusted to their highest points. Fig. 2 is an end view with wings or sides adjusted. Fig. 3 is a similar View to Fig. 2 with one wing down and the other partially so. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of cover in its closed position. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of brace for top and connecting-rod. Fig. 6 is an end view showing brace or support upon which top is built. Fig. 7 is a similar view to Fig. 5, showing the worm-wheel and elevating-rod 8. Fig. 8 is a View showing the rope, pulleys, &;c., for elevating cover. Fig. 9 is a hinged connection in rods 9. Fig. 10 is an enlarged section of rope for elevating top through rods 9, working in tubes 14. Fig. 11 shows shafts and pulleys upon which the rope is wound when elevating top. Fig. 12 shows section of pulley and rope 12 upon the same, and Fig. 13 shows ratchet-Wheel and key for locking the crank-shaft when operated.
1 represents the top of cover, in which is journaled rollers 2 for the purpose of rolling the end curtains upon the same, 3 hinges connecting top 1 with sides 6, and 4 hinges connecting sides 6 with rods 7, extending alongside of top.
5 are bearings for rods 7; 8, shafts having worm-wheels 16 at their ends; 10, a crank on the lower ends of rods 8 for operating the same; 11, bearings for rods .8; 14, pinions on sides 6 for engaging worms 16; 12, ropes for elevating cover, and 13 pulleys upon which the ropes are? wound.
9 are the supporting and elevating rods for the lower part when it is desired to lock the parts with relation to each other. The purpose of this separable feature in the rods 9 is that you may lay the rods 9 down out of the way of stacker-chute.
23 is a shaft which extends across the machine and is provided with pulleys 24, 25,
and 26 for the purpose of winding the rope thereupon.
30 are catches for the curtains. These pulleys are provided with a ratchet 29 and pawl 27 for locking the parts when operated.
31 is a crank for operating shaft 23.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to cover the machine, the crank 31 is operated and the top lowered. The crank 10 is then turned and the sides of the top lowered and the curtains let down and fastened. The parts are elevated by the same mechanism above described.
Having now fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with the main cover, of sides for inclosing the same, pinions connected with said sides, a shaft carrying worms engaging said pinions and having a crank to rotate the same so as to elevate or lower the sides, curtains for inclosing the ends, and means for elevating or depressing said cover.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with the main cover, of sides for inclosing the same, pinions connected with said sides, a shaft carrying worms engaging said pinions and having a crank to rotate the same so as to elevate or lower the sides, curtains for inclosing the ends, means for elevating or depressing the sides, and rods for supporting the same over the machine.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with the main cover, of sides for inclosing the same, supporting-rods journaled on the machine, means for elevating said rods, a supplemental rod carrying a worm at its top, a pinion on the hinged sides of the top for engaging the Worm 011 the rod, and joints formed in the rear rods, so that the same may be swung away from the machine, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with the main cover, of hinged sides connected with the same, rods connected with the hinged sides, supportingrods carried by the machine, hearings on the tops of said rods, said bearings supporting the rods of the sides, a pinion carried by the top, a vertical rod carrying a worm engaging with said pinion for the purpose of operating the 15 sides, bearings formed on the machine for the supporting-rods, rollers on the ends of said rods, ropes passing within said vertical bearings and around the rollers on the rods,
