SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,102, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed May 31, 1889. Serial No. 312,724. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. FULLER- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awnings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has for its object to provide an awning which can be readily and conveniently raised or extended and securely locked in its extended position to secure it against storms or quickly raised out of the way when found necessary;'and the invention consists in the several details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of a store-front or other place where it is desirable to attach the awning, the same having secured thereto suitable brackets a to support the journals of a roller B, to which the inner edge of the awning O is attached. The frame of the awning consists of the diagonal brace D and the two horizontal arms E F, said frame being the same on the opposite side of the frame A, and the two arms F connected together at their front end by' a rod 1), to which the outer end of the awning is attached. The inner end of the brace D is pivoted to a short lug 0, projecting from the frame A, and the outer end of the brace is pivoted to the horizontal arm F, while the arm E is pivoted to a similar lug cl and also to the arm F, which form together a folding frame for supporting the awning. To one end of the roller B is a pulley e, to which is attached a cord or rope f, preferably made of braided wire, the lower or opposite end of the cord or rope being attached to a suitable reel Gr, supported in a bracket g and provided with a crank-handle h, for turning it, and a ratchet 1 and pawl k. Atube H has one end attached to the bracket and the opposit-e end to a small bracket Z, projecting from the frame A, and the cord or rope f passes through said tube to protect it from the weather, said tube being open at both ends and a hole formed in the bracket-s in line with the ends of the tube, so as to allow the cord or rope to pass to the roller and reel to which the ends are attached. The e1nployment of the ratchet and pawl on the reel enables the awning to be held at any position desired, and when it is found desirable to render the frames of the awning rigid in case of win d-storms a set-screw m is provided, which is connected to the arm E, said screw engaging with a notch 12 upon the inner extremity of the arm F, and when the screw is tightened against the end of the arm F it will make the frame firm and rigid and prevent the awning from flapping up and down. The awning frame is self-supporting and will not fall to the ground or sidewalk if the awning becomes detached or torn from its fastenings, and may be secured to the frame and roller by any well-known and preferred means, the frame of the awning being the essential and important feature of my invention, and the means for looking it rigid is also considered of material value.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
suitable reel, and a pawl and ratchet connected to the reel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
