To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEOPHILE SHARROW, of Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Im- 5 proved Device for Operating Awnings, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description.
My invention relates to a device for operating awnings, and has for its object to provide a means whereby an awning may be readily raised and lowered, and wherein the said awning, when raised,will be wound upon a suitable roller, and be thereby protected from the weather and prevented from creasing.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

In carrying the invention into effect the usual lower side bars, a, are employed, piv-, oted to a bracket secured to the side of a building, and connected bya fixed transverse bar, a.
At each sideof thewindow or opening to be covered by an awning horizontal brackets B are attached, adapted to carry a roller, B, which roller is provided with a flange at one end and a sprocket-wheel, b, at the other, the said flange and sprocket-wheel being rigidly attached to the roller, preferably immediately inside the brackets.
The upper edge of the front section, D, of the awning is attached to the roller B, and the lower end is held in connection,in any suitable manner, with the transverse bar a. The lower edge of the side pieces, D, of the awning are rigidly secured to the outer end of the said transverse bar. a, and also adj ustably attached near the inner end of the aforesaid bar a, as shown in Fig. 2,the upper end of said side pieces being securely fastened to a screw-eye, d, or similar device located at the side of the window beneath the roller 13'. and a strip of elastic material, (1, held in said hem, having its ends attached under tension to said side pieces, and centrally the upper inclined edge of each'side piece, D, a ring, E, is attached upon the inside, through which ring a cord, 6, is passed, having one end attached to the outer edge of the front piece, D, and the other end to the transverse bar a, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the sides are held in engagement with the front, and through the elastic strips dthe side pieces automatically gather or fold upon themselves as the awning is hoisted up.
As a guide for the transverse roller B, friction-rollers F F are held in bearings beneath and in engagement with, centrally, the said roller B, the friction-rollers being detachably supported in a horizontal position by the e11- trance of their carrying-frame in suitablesockets, f, attached to the wall above the window. As a means for raising and lowering the awning, bevel gear-wheels H H are journaled in an angular bracket,K, horizontally attached to the side of the window-frame near the sill. One arm of said bracket extends inward. Each gear is provided with an integral post adapted to receive a suitable key or crank, and
the gear H, with a sprocket-wheel, K, keyed upon the same shaft, which sprocket-wheel and the sprocket-wheel b above, in vertical 8o alignment therewith, are made to carry an endless chain belt, M. The outer bevel-gear, H, may be dispensed with, if found desirable, being simply placed in connection with the inner gear, H, for convenience. 8
If found desirable, in place of the elastic strip (1, a jointed bar may be used to control the folding of the side pieces.

The device may be used in connection with curtains or similar articles as conveniently as with awnings.
