BELLE DORSEY PENNINGTON, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
PORTABLE AWNING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,853, dated June 14, 1887. Application filed April 14, 1887. Serial No. 23!,781. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BELLE DORSEY PEN- NINGTQN, of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented awning-frame and awning in which the'awning may be raised or lowered, as required, and which may be easily applied to or removed from a window or door, and without the aid of a specially-skilled workman.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar. letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional elevation of a window frame and sash, having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view with the awning removed. Fig. 3 is a view of a modified form of the outer folding frame.
The main frame a of my improved awning is of rectangular form, and may be made of various sizes, and is adapted to be secured in a windowframe outside of the upper or outer sash, preferably by means of thumb-screws 5, carried by said frame a, the said screws taking in the sides of the window-frame. To the upper end of the rectangular frame a is hinged another frame, composed of two sections, 0 c, that are hinged to each other, and at or near the bottom the lower section, 0, is provided with hooks (1, one at each side, which are adapted to engage two opposite screw-eyes or like attachments, 6, a series of such eyes being provided on the inner surface of the two vertical mem bers of the main frame.
On the upper section, 0, of the outer folding frame is placed the awning f, and fastened thereto in any suitable manner at the upper end, the awning being composed of any suitable fabric, and carrying at or near its lower end a slat or rod 9. To the rod or directly to the awning f, at the lower end, are secured cords or ropes h, preferably three in number, that pass through series of rings i, secured on the under side of the awning f, through screweyes j or like attachments on the upper end of the member 0 of the folding frame, and
thence downward to a point where they may,
be conveniently reached from the inside of the window or door, the drawings showing them ened to the hook Z, or in any other convenient Reference is to be had to the accompanying manner; or the cord at may extend upward to the awning f, and be secured directly thereto.
To the inner end of the side portions of the awning f are secured rings 0, that travel on vertical guide cords or ropes a, secured on each side of the main frame a at the upper portion thereof.
Such being the general construction of my improved portable awning, the operation is as follows: The main rectangular frame a, carrying the other portions of the awning, is placed in the window-frame outside the upper sash, which may readily be accomplished by passing the said awning-frame out through the window. hen fitted to place in the windowframe, the thumb'screws I), carried by the frame a, are driven into the window -frame, thus firmly securing theawning-frame in place. To raise the awning, more or less, as desired, the lower section, 0, of the outer folding frame is raised, and the hooks d on the lower end thereof inserted in two corresponding eyes, 0, whereby the hinged portion of the folding frame 0 0' will be raised or lowered, as the case may be, and with it the awning f,- or if it is desired to raise the awning without disturbing the frame, the same may be effected by pulling downward on the cord or ropek, which, acting on the cords b, will draw the awning f upward, more or less, as desired. When the awning is not required, the hooks don the folding frame may be disengaged from the eyes 6, and the said folding frame allowed to swing inward'against the main frame a, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and by pulling downward on the cords h the awningf is en- ICO tirely drawn upward to the top of the frame. When raising and lowering the awning f by the ropes, the latter are unfastened from the eye l. The rope m serves to draw down or unfurl the awning.
With my improved awning it will be seen that the admission of the sun and light may be easily controlled without interfering to any great extent with the free admission of the air to the store or dwelling, and the whole device is very simple and easy of operation, and may be set up in place and taken down to be stored without the aid of specially-skilled workmen.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown the outer folding frame made of metal piping, the hooks p at the upper end thereof serving to hinge it to the main frame of the awning. The frame-work of the awning may, however, be formed of any suitable material.
My invention is equally applicable to doors and windows.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In aportable awning, the combination, with the main vcrtieatframe detachable from the window or door frame, of the outer frame consisting of two hinged sections hinged at the top to the main frame and adapted to fold against the same, and an awning carried by said outer frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a portable awning, the combination,
with the main vertical frame a, made detachable from the window or door frame, of the outer frame consisting of the hinged sections a c, secured to the frame a and adapted to fold against the same, the awning f, carried by frame 0 c, and ropes for raising and lowering the said awning, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a portable awning, the combination, with the main vertical frame a, made detachable from the window or door frame and carrying a series of eyes, a, on each of the side members thereof, of the outer frame, 0 c, hinged to the frame a and adapted to fold against the same, hooks l at the lower end of said folding frame adapted to engage the eyes 0 for adjusting the said folding frame higher or lower, and the awning f, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the main frame, of the folding frame 0 c, hinged thereto, the awning f, carrying series of ringsi on its under side, and provided with rings 0 on its side portions, the operating-cords passed through the rings 1', and the vertical guide-ropes n at each side of the awning on the main frame (1 thereof, on which guide-ropes the rings 0 on the side flaps of the awning travel, substantially as described.
