JOHN K. TOMLINSON, OF RONCEVER'IE, WEST VIRGINIA.
WINDOW-SHADE FIXTURE.
Application filed October 20, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN K. TOMLINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ronceverte, in the county of Greenbrier and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Vindow-Shade Fixture, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be employed for raising and lowering bodily, a roller on which a shade is wound.
The invention aims to provide novel means whereby the hanger, through which is passed the flexible element which operates the device, may be mounted; and, generally, to improve and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
\Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawingz-Figure 1 is a fragmental front elevation showing a.
portion of the window frame wherewith the device forming the subject matter of this application has been assembled; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 1 is a fragmental perspective showing a portion of one rack bar.-
In the accompanying drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the stiles of a window frame, to which are secured vertically disposed rack bars 2. Each rack bar 2 intermediate its longitudinal edges is outwardly distorted to form a longitudinal rib 3 provided with openings at. The longitudinal edges of the rack bar 2 are fashioned into approaching, overhanging flanges 5.
The invention includes a pair of brackets 6 and 9 mounted to slide along the rack bars. Each bracket is of U-shape and embodies lateral feet 7 slidably received within the contour of the flanges 5, the feet 7 being flexed outwardly as shown at 8 to form shoulders which receive the longitudinal rib 3.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 23, 1917.
Serial No. 56,937.
Journaled for rotation in the brackets 6 and 9 is a shaft 10 provided with pinions 11 and 12, working in the openings 4 on the rack bars The pinion 12 which is carried by the bracket 9 is engaged by an angular dog 1% pivotally mounted on a cross pin 15 located at the angle of the dog and mounted in the side arms of the bracket, one arm of the dog coacting with the pinion 12 to prevent a rotation thereof, the other end of the dog being engaged by a spring 16 secured intermediate its ends to the side wall of the bracket 9, one end of the spring bearing against the front portion of the bracket and the other end of the spring bearing against the inner edge of the dependin arm of the dog.
Attached to the dog 14. is a flexible ele- I ment l7 rove through a pulley 18 carried by a hanger 19 having an offset arm or stem 20 inserted into the upper end of the recess 21 existing at the upper end of the rib 3 of one rack bar 2.
The numeral 28 indicates acurtain roller or curtain support of any other desired sort, the support, if in the form of a roller, comprising trunnions 27 which are journaled for rotation in the brackets 6 and 9.
Securing elements 22, which may be nails, screws or the like, pass through the ends of the rack bars 2 and securethe same to the stiles 1 of the window frame. It is to be observed that one of these securing elements passes not only through the upper end of one bar but, as well, passes through the lower end of the stem 20 of the hanger19, thus holding the end of the stem seated in the upper end of the recess 21 behind the rib 3.
In practical operation, when the depending end of the flexible element 17 is drawn upon, both brackets 6 and 9 will be raised, together with the shaft 10 and the shade support 28. Owing to the fact that the brackets are operatively connected by the shaft 10, and owing to the fact that this shaft carries the pinions 11 and 12 which mesh into the openings of the rack bars, both brackets and the shade roller will ride smoothly and evenly, although tension is applied by the flexible element 17 to one bracket only. i
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a strip and means for securing the strip to a portalframe, the strip being outwardly extended intermediate its longitudinal edges to define a rib having openings forming a-rack, and to define recess behind the rib; a shaderoiler-receiving bracket interengaged With the strip for Vertical sliding movement; a pinion carried by the bracket and meshing into the rack; a hanger inserted into the 10 upper end 01" the recess behind the rib; and
a flexible element trained across the hanger and secured to the bracket.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signa ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
