Description

H. E. MARCH'AND.
Burtain-Fixtures.
Patented Nbv.4,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. MAROHAND, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,342, dated November 4, 1873 application filed April 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: M
Be it known that I, HENRY E. MARQHAND, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has for its object to furnish an improvement in curtains or shades for windows and other purposes, which are so constructed or arranged as to permit different portions of the window to be covered or uncovered, as may be desired; and to this end the invention consists of a roller provided with a curtain carrying or fastening device, and arranged in a vertical position at the side of the window-frame, in combination with a spring for automatically closing the curtain when the fastening device is released, all as will more fully hereinafter appear.
I11 the accompanying drawings, the figure represents a perspective View of my invention as applied to a window.
The letter A in the present instance designates a window-casing, on the opposite sides of which are arranged the vertical rollers BC- one above the other-and provided with suitable gudgeons or journals, which are inserted into brackets D D, or other suitable device. To the rollers are attached curtains or shades E F, made of any fabric or material usually employed for curtains, and having applied to their outer or free ends binding-strips Gr, to which are attached projecting knobs H, or other suitable device, for manipulating the curtain. Each curtain is made of a suitable length to extend, when in an uncoiled state, entirely across the window, so as to enable its free end to be connected, by means of a loop, I, or its equivalent, to a projecting stud or pin, K, on the opposite side of the casing or the free ends of two 'parallel curtains may be drawn to the center of the window, and there directly connected by means of the loop and projecting knobs on their binding-strips. The sectional or independent curtains, arranged in pairs, one or more in number, will enable either the top or lower portion of the window to be covered or screened with great convenience. I11 order to wind up or retract the curtains after their ends are released from their fastening devices, I employ india-rubber or elastic cords L, which are attached to the grooved sheaves M on the ends of the rollers.
The advantages which a curtain or curtains arranged at the sides of a window possess over those arranged at the top of the casing are manifold, and it will suffice to state that the salient features are ease and convenience in operation, and a decided ornamental appearance to the window, especially when the curtains are of colored fabrics.
What I claim as my invention is-- In a curtain-f1xture, the rollers E 0, each provided with a curtain having fastening devices G G, in combination with an operatingspring, L, for closing the curtains, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as described, and adapted to be arranged vertically upon the side of the window, as set forth.
I In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of April, 1873.
HENRY E. MARGHAND.
