- Be it known that I, GEORGIANNA E. CUR- TI's, a citizen of theiUnited States, and a resil i dent of Auburn, county of Cayuga, State of .New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings on one sheet, making part of this specification. 11..1o My invention relates to improvements in curtain fixtures in which a horizontallyswinging rod or pole is used, on which the p 1 drapery of the curtain or portiere is usually hung; and the objects of myimprovement are, first, to provide means whereby the said rod or pole may be supported in a position for swinging backward and forward at the side or sides of the passage-way, window, or other i openin g, and, secondly, to provide appliances `whereby the said swinging rod or pole may be adjusted to ward off or deflect drafts of air y or the said passage-way entirely closed without disarranging the hanging or draping of the curtain.

I attain the above objects by the mechanj` ism illustrated on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- .g y Figure 1 shows a curtain-supporting rod or y g pole pivoted on a notched plate at one side of a passage-way with a curtain hung thereon in the usual manner, the whole showing a view in elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the notched plate constituting one of the features of my invention and shows in dotted lines a portion of the a; y rod or pole pivoted thereon; and Fig. 3 is a yertical section through the rod or pole and the notched plate at the pivot-point of the same, together with the locking mechanism and the means for operating the same. Similar figures for reference refer to similar parts in the several views.

A notched plate l, of a semicircular form, l as clearly shown in Fig. 2, is provided and is furnished at its edge with a series of notches 2 and a flange 3, by means of which latter it is fastened in the desired position at the side l of the passage-way by the screws 4. The rod or pole 5, from which depends the curtain 6, is provided at its pivotal end with a slot 7, in which is' passed the notched plate l, and it is p pivoted to the said notched plate 1 by the Serial No. 59,532. (No model.)

pivot-bolt 8, thus allowing the said rod or pole to freely swing both forward and backward in the passage-Way. `The rod or pole 5 is still 5 further provided near its pivotal end with a mortise 9, and in the said mortise is pivoted a locking-bolt 10, the locking end of which is turned so it may enter in any of the notches 2 of the notched plate l, as shown in Fig. 3. The outer end of the locking-bolt is provided with a suitable spring 11, which is interposed between the said end and the rod or pole 5, and an eyehole by which is fastened an operating-cord 12, which said cord 12 passes upward through a hole 13, provided through the rod or pole 5 for that purpose, the object of which arrangement of parts will be presently seen.

The rod or pole 5 is furnished on its upper side with a bar 14, having on its under side an arrangement of screw-eyes 15, through which is passed the operating-cord 12. The said bar 14 may be utilized for the support of an ordinary grillework 16, if so found desirable, as I have illustrated in Fig. 1.

That the rod or poll 5 may be sustained in proper alinement with the notched plate 1, on which it swings, a guy chain or cord 17 is provided between the outer end of the pole and the notched-plate side of the passage way, the same being arranged above the said rod or pole to further steady the same and to keep it from sagging. In the illustration one end of the guy is shown secured to the upper edge of the grille, in which position it performs its required office, as is evident.

It will be observed from the above descrip-a tion of the several parts comprising my improvement that their arrangement and operation, while simple, give assured results. It is frequently desired to partially shut off the opening of a passage-way without disarrangement of the drapery itself, not only for the purpose of privacy, but to defect certain currents of air which may be passing too freely through the opening. In order to do this effectually, it is only necessary for the operator to pull down on the actuating-cord 12, when the locking-bolt 10, pivoted in the mortise 9 on the under side of the rod or pole, is released from the notch in the notched plate `where it may have been and the curtain and pole are free to be swung at any desired angle IOC.

within the passage-way so long as a tension is maintained on the operating-oord. On the release of this tension by the operator the locking-bolt catches into the proper notch of the notched plate through the recoil of the spring 11, placed between the outer end of the said locking-bolt and the under side of the'rod or pole, as has been described. Thus the curtain and pole are adjusted to the desired place without disarranging the draping of the curtain when it is so desired.

In the drawings, at Fig. 1 I have shown the outer end of the pole finished with a halt' ornament, which may complement a similar arrangement of parts at the opposite side of a passage-way, the eXtreme Width of which may render such division of the pole and repetition of the working parts desirable, the two half ornaments meeting and combining to form a completed figure when the ends of the poles are brought together and the passageway closed by their respective curtains.

Having thus set forth the construction and operation of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, is-

In a curtain-ixture the pole 5, having on its inner end a pivot-bolt, on its outer end a half ornament, on its upper side a grille-bar having screw-eyes on the under side thereof, on its under side near the inner end a mortise having a locking-bolt, a hole 13, a cord passing from said locking-bolt through said hole and said screw-eyes of said grille-bar, and a guy chain or cord between the jamb of the openin gand the grille-bar, combined with a notched plate l, having flanges 3, 8, constructed substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
