AWNING.
No. 305,318. Patented Sept. 16, 1884".

Units STATES -ATENT ()FFIQEQ FRANK B. MALLORY, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
AWNING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,318, dated September 16, 1884-.
Application filed July 15, 1884.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. MALLORY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awnings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in awnings; and it consists inthe construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then sought to be defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure represents a rear perspective view of a portion' of a store-front having my improved awning applied thereto.
A'represents a store-front or window-frame, which may be of any desired size, as my i11- ve'ntion is designed to be applied to both ordinary windows as well as the whole fronts of buildings.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my improvement applied to a store-front the door of which sets within a recess formed between the bow-windows, in which case I provide a supplemental awning, A, which is adapted to screen said recess. The supplemental piece A is secured to the roller around which the main awning is wound. The upper part of this supplemental piece or awning is provided with a rod, a, towhich is at tached a cord, at, which passes over suitable pulleys, as shown, to the interior of the building, or to a point to which easy access may be had.
In the drawing the main awning B has secured to the same within a suitable pocket or cover a longitudinal rod, b, which has attached near the center pulleys b. A cord, B, is secured at a point, 0, to the side pieces, B, as shown, and passes through the pulley b, and from thence throughanother pulley, b, attached to' the corner of the extension-bar, and
(No model.)
from whence it iscarried through pulley b" to a means attached to the extension-bar. Another cord, 1/, (shown in dotted lines,) may be secured to the flaps orzside pieces for drawing and holding the same against the casing A.
If desired, the cord 12, hereinbefore described, may be dispensed with and a weight substituted therefor, which weight may be attached at the point 0 upon the side flaps; or the weight may consist of a chain, Q, attached at one end to the transverse rod in the lower edge of the flap or side piece, which weight will bring the lower edge of the side pieces in a horizontal position when the awning is raised, in which position they can be secured by fastening the end to theframe A.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that an awning-embodying my improvements is of easy and ready operation, and can be readily adjusted to not only screen the window-front, but also the space between said windows.
a I claim- 1. The combination, in an awning, of a main awning, a roller suitably supported, and adapted tohave said main awning wound thereon, and a supplemental awning-section, A, ar-
ranged to unwind from said roll above said main awning, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in an awning, of an awning-section provided with side sections weighted at their inner ends, for the purpose described, and cords B, attach ed to said side sections adjacent to said weighted ends, passing around pulleys secured to the main awning,
and thence to the'eXtension-bar, where they may be suitably attached or held, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in an awning, of an awning-section provided with side sections,
B,'a cord, B, attached to the inner ends of corners of said sections ,B, passing around awning, substantially for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, in an awning, of an awning-section provided with side sections.
weighted at their inner ends, for the purpose described, and cords B, attached to said side section adjacent to said weighted ends, passing around pulleys secured at or near the center of the main awning, thence around pulleys located at the corners of the awning-frame, and finally attached at any suitable point of said frame, for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, in an awning, of an awning-section provided centrally with a horizontal pocketed bar, and with side sections Weighted at their inner ends, for the purpose described, and cords B, attached to said side sections adjacent to said weighted ends, passing around pulleys secured at or near the center of said pocketed bar, thence around pulleys I 5 located at the corner of the awning-frame, and finally attached at any suitable point of said frame, substantially for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
