Description

c. L. BARNES.
Awnings.
N0.l48,l05, u Patented March 3.187@y Waff? UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIoEo CHARLES L. BARNES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
4nnPRovEwiENr IN AwNlNGs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14 8,105, dated March 3, 1874; application filed January 5, 1874.
To all whom it .may concern Beit known that l, CHARLES L. BARNES, ot' the. city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Awnings, of which the following is a speci iication Figure l is a front view of my improved awning, shown as closed. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section of the same taken through the line x av, Fig. l.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to that class of awnings which are composed ot' concentric or telescopically-movable sections; and it consists in providing one or more ot1 the sections ofthe awning with ventilators, which are closed in an automatic manner as the vsections of the awning are drawn into each other.
A represents the window-frame. B are the sections that form the awning, any desired number ot' which may be used, and which are so formed as to shut up into each other, as shown in Fig. l. The upper part ofthe sections ma-y be made of any desired shape so as to correspond with the form of the window or door to which it is to be applied, or as may best adapt it to the use for which it is intended. The inner edge of the outer section B is secured to the window-frame A. Upon the outer edge of the upper part of each outer section are formed two or more inwardly-projecting hooleshaped lips, b1, which, when the awning is extended, interlock with similar outwardly-projecting lips b2, formed upon the inner edge ot' each inner section, so that each inner section, when extended, may be supported by the next outer section. The lower or more ot' the inner sect-ions B are formed' openings, in which are pivoted plates E, the inner edges of which underlap, and the outer edges overlap the edges ot' the openings in said sections, so that the said plates may be closed automatically as the sections B are closed. F are cords, the ends of which are attached to the inner section B. Thecords F pass aroundguide-pulleys G, and descend together along one side of the frame A, so that by drawing upon the said cords the awning may be closed. To enable this to be done, lips or fianges b3 are formed upon the outer edges of each inner section, and which, as the cords F are drawn upon, strike against the outer edges ot' the succeeding outer section,
so that the sections will all be closed into the stationary or outer section by pulling upon the said cords F.
The awning may be used over windows, doors, 85e., and as a summerhouse, a tent, o1' for any other required use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of oneor more ventilators, E, with one or more ot' the inner sections B, substantially as herein shown and described.
CHAS. L. BARNES.
