ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN: t Be it known that I, ROBERT DICK, of the city of Builalo, in rthe county of Erie, and State of New York,
Ihave invented a new and improved method ofconstructing my Labelling Machine, patented by me 4th October,
1359; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to -the accompanying drawing, forming;r part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' my invention consists in combining the use of a steam-packing belt, or its equivalent, with distributers and a new arrangement of the rollersin fixed bearings, the combination adapting the machine to the use of a common Hour paste, less iuid and more potential than any mucilage that could be used in my machine prior to this my invention; which further consists in .adding a spring-wire frame to the machine in such a manner as to make the downward pressure of the frame, resulting from adroitly dropping the machinel on the article to be labelled, perform the work of cutting the label oil', and of stamping it rmly on the required spot.
lo understand the construction and operation of this my improvement, let A A, wherever found on the drawing, represent the apron or belt, as seen'in Figures l, fl, and 3, being made of steam packing or its equivalent, so as to be substantially non-elastic, impervious to moisture, and so thin as to turn pliantly round the smallest roller in thc machine, all the rollers, C C I and L, being adapted to work in combination with this belt by dispensing wholly with the roller-frame, making the rollers turn in a new arrangement of bearings firmly attached to the sides of the machine, or placed therein, as seen. at UVW X, tig. 3; which arrangement of rollers is combined with the use of a belt ofthe above-recited description, the inside of which is kept clean by a smalitransverse strip of thin brass, or its equivalent, represented by Y in iig. 3, while a similar strip of brass, represented by Z in iig. 3, touching the belt as it rises outvot` the paste or mucilage, with a notched edge, allows no excess of paste .to come in contact with the labels, which never touch the belt till it has risen' above these distributcrs; the results ofthe above-recited combination and arrangements being the easy avoidance of the annoyances occasioned by thc cementinzrjr together ofthe wrappers and papers in drying; also, relief from the annoyances consequent on the escapement of the belt from the weight-roller while revolving inthe paste, as also from the belt doubling.,-l
over at its edges, and from other erratic exhibitions that were Wont to occur, often causing much delay and extreme vcxation. Also let E E E, wherever found on the'gures of thedrawing, represent the spring-wire frame, which, hinged near the centre of the machine, as at G, and joined to the connecting-rod F F, tig. 2, the straight ends of which being movable in the tubes H H, fig. 3, allow the frame to drop about an inch below the front of the machine, so that when the machine is allowed to drop in a suitable manner ou the article to bei labelled, the downward pressure of the spring-frame is conveyed by the connecting-rod to the upper surface of the cutter-stamp, forcing it down on the projecting label, instantly cutting it oft', and stamping it firmly on the wrapper, envelope, orpaper, and on the required spot.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, may be stated briefly as follows:
1. I claim the lcombination ofthe steam-packing belt, with the distributers, and the new arrangement of the rollers for securing the results as recited, in the way and manner substantially as herein set forth.
2. I claim the spring-wire frame, and the manner of connecting it with the machine, for the purposes stated, together with'all other ways and manners, substantially the same as those herein set forth or intended to be set forth'.
ROBERT DICK.
