IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR PASTING- LABELS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, W. E. BOORAEM, of New York city, of New York county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improved Apparatus for Pasting Labels and l dor hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this application.

Previous to my invention, it has been the custom, in applying paper labels to bottles, to take each label separately, place it face downward on a suitable table or plane surface, apply' the paste or other stickingmaterial, with a brush to its back, and then, removing the label so coated, apply it with the ingers to the bottle to be labelled.

In the business of labelling bottles in large quantities, (as,l for instance, in labelling wines and liquors, and many bottled liquids and materials which are put up in great numbers ci bottles,) this process or method of labelling is found to be very slow and expensive.

My invention has for its object to facilitate the operation or process of labelling bottles, by providing an apparatus adapted to hold and apply the paste to the labels, and present them in a convenient manner to the operative, and so that they can be aiiixed to the bottles much more rapidly than by the old method.

And to these ends, my invention consists in the employment of a label-holder, adapted to retain in a given position a-pile ot' labels, and a paste-board adapted to receive a coating of paste, and which, when applied to the label-holder, will pick up a single label, (coating its back with the paste supplied to said board,) and present it conveniently to be taken oi -by hand and axed to the bottle.. To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it more particularly, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- 'Figure l is avertical section of an apparatus adapted to receive and hold the labels, in its normal condition;

Figure 2 is a similar section of the same, illustrating the application thereto of the pasting-board, and the operation of picking oii and pasting the labels;

Figure 3 is a top view of the apparatus; and

Figure 4, a detail perspective view of the pastingboard.

A is a simple box, the top oi' which constitutes the table for supporting the pile of labels, and within which is arranged the mechanism of the adjustable retainingarms, between two sets of which the labels are held laterally, as will be presently explained.

B isx a carriage or plat-torni, which tits loosely within the box A, is free to vmove vertically within it, and which is supported upon springs, e e, which extend up, as shown, from the bottom of said box.

OVG', tc., are vertical retaining-arms, which are a1'- ranged to slide hom and toward the centre of the box, upon suitable ways formed in or on the platform or carriage B, and which are moved or adj usted by means of screw-shafts or rods, d, iitted in bearings, s, on the lower side oi carriage B, and working in female screws inthe lower ends ofthe said arms C C.

These adjustable arms, C G, extend up some distance above the level of the top of box A, (through slots cut in said top,) as clearly seen at iig. l, and are adapted to receive between them, and retain laterally, a pile4 of paper labels, illustrated by the red lines at figs. l and 2, and the object and advantage of having the said arms C C adjustable toward and from each other are to adapt them to the retention of piles of labels oi' diiierent sizes and different proportions.

F is a simple board, provided with a convenient handle, to the surface of which the paste is applied with a brush by the operative, and which is placed on the tcp ofthe pile of labels and pressed down, as shown at tig. 2, for thev purpose of picking up and presenting a label, (ready to be aixed to the bottle,) as shown at ii". 4.

The operation of the apparatus shown and described requires but little explanation.

suit the size and proportions or" the labels to be used, a pile of said labels is placed, faces downward, between said arms, and upon the top of box A, vas clearly illustrated at rigs. l and 3 by the red lines.

The operative then taking the pasting-board F by its handle, g, applies to it a coating of paste, and, placing it over the pile of labels, presses it downward, (compressing the pile, and forcing down the retaining-devices G G, and their spring-supported carriage B and its appendages,) suiiiciently to insure the adherence of the topmost label of the pile to the sticky surface of board F, as seen atliig. 4, from whence it is conveniently removed by hand and transferred to the bottle.

As the labels are removed, one by one, the yielding arms C G are each time pressed further down by the application ofthe pasting-board, (see iig. 2,) permitting the said board always to come down into contact with the top label oi' the pile, land at the same'time always serving to retain the labels laterally until they are all removed.

It will be understood that the apparatus may be varied almost innitely in its details of construction, without departing from the spirit of my invention, so long as the retaining-jaws, or equivalent devices, are arranged to permit the contact of the receiver-board F with the labels one at a time, as described.

' Of course a diii'erent arrangement of devices would answer, and the apparatus might in some instances be used with great advantage without being adapted to receive and use more than one given-size of labels, but

I propose, generally, to make-it so'as to be adjusted to suit different-sized labels, as described.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Preparing (or pasting) endl-'presenting the labels, ready to be nlixed to the bottles,v in the manner described, that is to soy, by applying the poste to a plane or board, .adapted to transfer the paste to thebaok side of the label, over its entire sln'face, und piek it up and present it for transfer by hand to the bottle.

2. Also, un Iapparatus,composed of :1- suitztble supporting-summe, and yielding retaining-arms, for holding a. supply of labels, und provided with a` movable pastingdboard, for applying the paste to I.nid picking up the labels,.one at a. time, as and for the purpose described.

3. Also, the adjustable und yielding retaining-arms, in combination with the label-supporting table, Whereby the apparatus muy be adapted to the use of labels of different sizes and pri'iportious, as hereinbefore set forth.
