nANInL T. ROBINSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 61,871, dated February 5 1867.

T() ALL T0 WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
-Be it known that I, DANIEL T. ROBINSON, of Boston, inthe county of Suifolk, and State of lliassaehusetts,V have invented anew and useful implement for Cutting Hay, and do hereby declare the following `to be a i`ull,.`
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in whichc Figure il is a top view or plan. Figure 2, a vertical and central section; and Figure 3, an end elevation of my invention.
My'present invention is an adaptation, or application to the purposes of cutting hay, of a greater portionY 'of the devicefor which 'Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me on `the 24th day of April, `1866,
for an implement for cuttingtobacco.
As represented in the accompanying drawing-3, A is the frame, and B the box o chute for receiving .the
hay to be fed along towards the cutting mechanism; ,this mechanism consisting of 'a bent 'or bell-crank lever, a,` pivoted at its angle-to theinner faceof a metallic frame Or bracket, b, applied to the front end of thefbox or i chute B, as represented. The lower extremity of the lever ais jointed to one endiof a knife,` c; the opposite end of such knife being jointed to thelower extremity of a swingingarm, d, pivoted to the inner face of the bracket b, and in a plane with the ever a. The longer arm e of this lever extends some'distance beyond the. frame of the implement, and serves as ahandle to impart the necessary movements to' the knife. A second and l stationary knife, f, is applied to the bracket b, and 'so as to Work in conjunction with Or against the inner face of the knife c, as shown in ig.- 2 of the drawings. The inner face of the bracket b lserves as an abutment or bearing surface'for the lever a and arm d to work against, to prevent lateral separation of the knives during the process of cutting hay. A spring, i],zisto be applied to any suitable part of the bracket, the free end of i such spring pressing against' the under side of the arm e of the'lever a, and serving to throw such arm upward after each depression of it, thus relieving the operator of much of the worst of' the labor, that is, of raising the lever. The operation of the machine wilLbe so readily understood, by those conversant with hayfcutters, that` further description is considered unnecessary.
I claim the special adaptation to the purposes of a hay-cutter, of' the mechanism before described, consist-` ing of the lever' a, swinging arm d, knives a and f, and spring g applicdto `and supported by the bracket b, Substantially as described. y
' DANIEL 'T.'ROBINSON.
