LORENZO D. WHEELER, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.

KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS :v v
That I, L. D. WHEELER, of Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Rubhing Down Scams in the ,Manufacture of Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a` full, clear, and enact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part 'of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved machine. i
Figure 2 represents a top or plan view of the clamp.
Figure 3 represents a'longitudinal central section of the clamp, its frame andseam-rest or table.
Figure 4 represents a top or plan4 View 'of the frame in which the rubber frame slides; and
Figure 5 represents a cross-section of the slide-frame, as shown in fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow, g. 1. g i
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe'it.
In the drawings, Arepresents the base oi bed-piece; the front'elevated end B is slotted out, as seen at a, to receive the tongue C of the seam-rest or table D, which is hinged at 6 in the slot a, in the end B of the basepiece A. A stand, E, rises from the top of the bed-piece A, and is slotted or carved out above the point c to receive the clamp F,`which is hinged between the sides d d, as shown in figs. l'and 3. The front part G of clamp F has an opening, H, into which the seam-rest or table D'ts when the former is depressed. I is a spring, fastened at one end by a screw, e, to stand, E, between the pieces d, while the other end presses up against the rear end of clamp F,`as fully shown in the drawings. J is the frame in which the'slide K works, the latter being moved back and forth by means of thepitman M, which is hinged at one end to the rear of slide K, and is counectedat the other end to a crank, N, upon shaft O; the latter may be operated bypower in any convenient manner. Frame J has two arms or branches P P, which are U-shapcd upozrtheir inner edge, as seen at ff, to fit corresponding grooves in slide K. The rear ends of arms P are attached to springs Q, (one of whichis seen in fig. 1,)which extend back and are fastened to a stand, R, in such a manner as to retain slide-frnme J inthe position shown in iig. 1, when not depressed by the operator. S is a wire or other suitable connection, by which the clamp F is elevated in front. Slide K has ears, gg, between which a rubber may be placed.
The operation is as follows: The operator depresses the rear end of clamp F into the position shownin figs. 1 and 3, when the front of the table Ddrops into the position shown'in red lines, figs. 1 and 3, whereby the leather can be easily inserted between lthe frontV part G of clump F and the table D, the seam being placed so as to be directly under vthe slide K. Clamp F is now allowed4 to rise in the rear, thereby depressing the part G, and clasping the leather securely upon the table D. Power is now applied to shaft O, which gives a rapid reciprocating motion to slide K, which carries the rubber. I The operator now depresses frame J, so as to cause the rubber to work back and forth -upon the seam, which is soon rubbed down flat upon the table D, after which the part G is elevated, the leather removed, and a new piece inserted, when the operation is repeated.
Having described my improved seam rubber, what I claim therein as new, and desire Vto secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination and arrangement of the clamp F and table D with bed-piece A, slide-frame J, and slide K, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with clamp F, constructed as vshown and described, of table D and spring I, substalb' tially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination with frame J of slide K and springs Q, as and for the purposes stated.
L. D. WHEELER.
