Description

F. w. .HOFF-MANN.
Cigar Cutter.
Patented Sept. 3, 1867.
@nimh tetes @anni @Hita FREDERICK lV. HOFFMANN, OF MORRISANIA, NEW YORK.
Letters .Patent No. 68,441, dated September 8, 1867 IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE FOR CUTTING OFF THE ENDS 0I' CIGARS.
@the -Srbrhnltnferrsh tu in time ettcrs @niet ant mziking pm'tuf its same;-
TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN: i
Be it known that 1, FREDERICK W. HOFFMANN, of Morrisania, in the county of Westchester, in thc-State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinesv for Cutting Off the Ends of Cigars; and I do hereby declare that the followingjs a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents a top view or plan.
Figure H is an end view of the same; and
Figure III is a longitudinal section, with the knife and knife-stand removed.
This invention consists in an improvement on the machine for which a patent, N. 59,606, was granted to me on the 13th day of November, 1866, and consists in the combination with the knife whereby the ends of the cigars are cut otf, of another knife, attached at right angles, for the purpose of cutting the cut-off' 'ends in two parts, ready to be used again for illings; and further, in the arrangement of a spring to guide the end of the knife and press the same against the end surface of the machine.
A is the frame, with the suitable recess f, provided with a movable guide, B, to regulate the length of the cigars. C and Dare the guides, on the forward end of the frame, for the knife G. E is the stand, containing thc rod or plunger F, to which the knife G is attached, all those parts being arranged and constructed substantially as specified in the patent dated the 13th of November. 1866. To the knife G another knife, J,'is attached, in a, line with the centre line of the machine, and below the recess f a spring-bearing, m, is fastened to one side of the machine, at the forward end, so as to allow the knife G to pass between this bearing m and the front face of the machine. The cutting edge of this knife J is at right angles to the cutting edge -of the knife G, by which arrangement the ends of the cigars which have been cut off bythe knife G are cut into two parts by the action of this knife J, ready to be used again as fillings in other cigars, said ends resting, during this operation, upon the spring-bearing m. Against the lower end of the guide D a fiat spring, v, is attached, so arranged that during the downward motion of the knife G the inner surface of this spring v will guide and force the end of the knife G close against the outer edge of the frame A, so as to insure always a perfectly smooth and square cut on the ends of the cigars.
What I claim as my invention, and desire t'o secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the knife- J, attached to the knife G, in combination with thespring-bearing m, in the manner and furthe purpose substantially as described.
2. I claim the arrangement and use of the spring v, to guide the end of the knife G, substantially as v set forth.
FREDERICK W. HOFFMANN.
