HYDRAULIC SEAL OR TRAP FOR JARS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,230, dated February 13, 1900. Application filed December12,l899- Serial No. 740,090- (No medal.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ocean JAcoBsEN MoL- LER, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of Flensburg, in the Province of Schleswig-Holstein, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Seals or Traps for Jars and.
Similar Receptacles, of which the following is a specification. I
The present invention relates to the closing of jars and similar receptacles for preserving ranged in such a manner that the closing of the jar is rendered absolutely air-tight, protecting the contents from access of oxygen and consequent fermentation and conserving at the same time the said contents by permanently keeping them under the influence of the antiseptic vapors of the said vaporizable antiseptic liquid, which vapors have free access to the interior of the jar, but are protected from escaping into the atmosphere by the oil seal.
With this end in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fullydescribed with reference to the accompanying drawing, on which I have shown in vertical section a double-sealed jar made in accordance with my invention.
The jar or receptacle a is provided, preferably on its outer surface and near its top, with an upwardly-bent flange b. The basin formed by this flange and surrounding the jar proper is divided by an intermediate flange or partition 0 into two chambers or troughs. The outer chamber or trough Z) is filled or nearly filled with a liquid of an indifierent nature, such as oil or the like, while the inner chamber or trough 6 contains an antiseptic vaporizable substance or liquid-such as a solution of formaline, acetic acid, and the like capable of volatilizing at ordinary temperatures and forming therebyantiseptic vapors.
The cover or lid d of the jar has the form of an inverted double-rimmed cup, the rims d" and d of this cup being of such form and arrangement that when the cover d has been placed in the proper position upon the jar they descend or enter into the corresponding chambers 19' and b and are submerged into the oilorantiseptic liquid, respectively, contained therein, as will be clearfrom the drawings without any further explanation.
. As the cover at does not rest upon the wall proper of the jar, the antiseptic vapors formed by the vaporizing antiseptic liquid in the chamber b are free to enter into the interior of the jar and to annihilate or destroy any septical germs or septics which may have been passed into the jar when placing the contents in it or when put-ting the cover d upon the jar. These vapors will also act upon thecontents themselves as a conservative means, as germs or septics contained in or on the said contents Will be annihilated by the said antiseptic vapors, From escaping into the atmosphere the said antiseptic vapors are protected,
the contents to be preserved and conserved placed in a separate receptacle ct. This receptacle may then be inserted into the jar a, as shown in the drawing, and may also be closed by a separate cover e, which, however, must leave sufficient free space or passage between itself and the top rim of the receptacle a in order to allow the antiseptic vapors to pass through such passage into the interior of the receptacle a, for which purpose short radial ridges or spacing-lugs o are provided on the under side of the lid-seat. The sunk top room of the preferably-cup-shaped cover 6 may also be filled, if desired, with a vaporizing antiseptic means, as indicated in the draw mg.
Having fully described my said invention, I declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a jar, a rim provided with a pair of channels, a lid, a pair of depending flanges thereon the outer longer than the inner, adapted to take into said channels, an internalreceiver suspended in said jar from a pe ripheral flange, a lid for said internal receiver, spacing-lugs thereon and a depression in said lid for the reception of an antiseptic, substantially as set forth.
2. In a jar or similar receptacle the combination of two chambers or troughs b b attached to the jar and surrounding each other, the inner trough being filled With a vaporizing antiseptic means and the outer trough with an indifferent liquid, and of a cover provided with two flanges or rims cl d corresponding to the troughs b b and adapted to enter the latter, a free passage being left between the cover and jar, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a jar, a rim provided with channels for containing vaporizable chemical preservatives and a liquid seal, a lid provided with depending flanges, the outer one of which supports the lid and rests on the bottom of its JGRGEN JAOOBSEN MGLLER.
