ATENT OFFICE. I
ANNIE S. EVELETH, OF LITTLE FALLS, NEW YORK.
APPAREL WAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,113, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed October 28,1899. Serial No. 735,020. (No model.)
To all whom it 71mg concern:
Be it known that I, ANNIE S. EVELETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Falls, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwaists,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to underwaists for women; and the object of the improvement is to provide a waist so constructed as to obviate any pressure upon the breasts of the wearer and also permit of free access to the breasts without necessitating unbuttonin g or disarranging the waist-a feature of great convenience for nursing mothers. v
I-Ieretofore the front and back portions of womens underwaists have been of substantially the same height and provided with an undivided supporting-strap extending over each shoulder. When thelower garments are secured to such waists, the supporting-straps or upper portions of the waist naturally exert a pressure upon the breasts, and thus cause not only discomfort, but positive injury to the wearer of the waist. These objectionable features are overcome in my improved waist, which embraces certain novel features hereinafter fully described.
The accompanying drawing represents a front view of a waist which embodies my invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
A represents the back of the waist, and B the front, which is madelower than the back for the purpose hereinafter mentioned.
A represents the ordinary row of but-tons by which the Waist is buttoned, and A represents two horizontal rows of buttons with which the lower garments are adapted to engage.
0 represents two shoulder-straps formed integral with the back of the waist, the front portions of each of said straps being divided into two supporting-straps D E, which branch out in opposite directions from each other, the inner supporting-straps being joined above the edge of the front portion of the waist and connected thereto by means of a supplemental supporting-strap J. This construction per mits of a very large opening for the breasts, and is particularly adapted for nursing women.
In order to further promote the comfort in wearing this waist, the upper edges of the.
.ton F. In case the buttons G are used for the inner straps none of the straps need be disturbed either in putting on or taking off the Waist.
It will be seen that in this waist the breasts of the wearer are left entirely free, and no pressure will be exerted upon them by any downward pull on thewaist.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An underwaist comprising the back A, the low front portion B, the shoulder-straps O, the divided supporting-straps D, E, extending from the shoulder-straps in opposite directions from each other, the supplemental supporting-strap J, connecting the inner supporting-straps D with the upper central front portion of the waist, the outer supportingstraps E connecting with the upper side portions of the waist means for adjusting the supporting-straps in both lateral and vertical directions, substantially as described.
' 2. An underwaist comprising the body portion, the two shoulder-straps O, the divided supporting-straps D, E, radiating therefrom, and the central strap J depending from the inner connected ends of the straps B, and supporting at its inner ends the front port-ion of the waist, substantially as shown and described.
