SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,922, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed February 11, 1899. Serial No. 705,252. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY E. REID, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bufialo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved window-sash in which the side pieces of the sashframe are formed in sections, so that the sash can be detached from the window-frame for cleaning or other purposes Without removing any portion of said window-frame; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and quickly-operated locking means for securing the portions of the side pieces of the sash closer and more firmly together, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichon the line as m, Fig. 1.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a windowframe having my improved sash connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sash. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken Fig. 4 is a rear elevation illustratingaportion of the sash; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view illustrating the locking device employed for connecting the sash-sections.
In referring to the drawings in detail like letters designate like parts.
The sashframe A, in which the windowpane is mounted, is provided with detachable side portions A', which interlock or partially dovetail with each other. The detachable side portions A are secured to the sides proper of the sash-frame by the keys B, which pass through openings in the ribs or interlocking portions of the sides of the frame and the side portions A. Plates 0 are arranged on the exterior of the ribs on the sides of the frame, being preferably set flush with said exterior, and plates 0 are arranged upon the rear surface of the ribs on the detachable side portions. Four of each of these plates are preferably employed, two upon each rib, the plates 0 being arranged over the front of the openings through the ribs on the frame and the plates 0 over the rear of the openings through the ribs on the detachable portions, said openings being so arranged that the openings on one rib will register with the openings on the adjacent rib when the detachable por- V In looking the detachable side portions to the main frame they are arranged so that the corresponding openings through the ribs reg ister, and the keys are inserted and passed through the openings and are then turned to bring the key-offset 6 against the cam c and draw the detachable portions closely and firmly to the main frame. Four keys are preferably employed, one in each corner, so that the detachable portions are very tightly and rigidly secured to the main frame when the keys are turned firmly into their locking position.
A thumb-screw D is. employed to lock the sash in any desired position.
The operation of the device will be easily understood from the foregoing, the object being to provide an extremely-quick locking de- Vice for the detachable portions of the sash, which will secure them strongly to the main frame.
I claim as my invention- A window-sash comprising a main frame and removable side portions; said main frame and side portions having ribs which overlap when in said frame and portions are in proper assembled position; and each of said ribs having openings, plates arranged over the front of the openings on the ribs of the main frame, plates arranged over the rear of the openings on the ribs of the removable portions and each having an inclined or cam surface and keys having offsets or enlargements adapted to engage with said cam-surfaces and drawthe removable side portions closely and snugly to the main frame, as set forth. 7
