CONVERTIBLE SCREEN AND STORM DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Screen and Storm Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a door adaptable for use as a screen-door or a storm-door and readily and easily convertible from one to the other.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of the invention, and referring thereto Figure 1 is a plan view showing the door provided with screens. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the door converted into a storm-door. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing another form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a frame having sides a, a top a, and a bottom a. In the drawings I have shown this frame provided with a cross-piece B, having right-angle shoulders I) b on its top and bottom, respectively.
I prefer to employ at least one cross-piece B, as shown in the drawings, to divide the opening and provide screens and blinds of suitable size for each opening. Strips E are fastened on the door-frame around the opening therein, and the inner edge e of each side strip is beveled. The inner edges of the top and bottom strips are straight. The frame a of the screen has its outer side edge 0 beveled, and the outer edges d of the blinds are also beveled to fit snugly against the beveled edges of the side strips E and make a tight engagement. At least one of the side strips, preferably the one, F, adjacent to the knob G of the door, is made adjustable to provide for the removal and insertion of the screen and blind. This strip E is provided with enlarged openings f, and bolts f extend through these openings and the door-frame and have thumb-nuts f By loosening the thumb-nuts the strip F can be moved sufliciently to permit the removal of the screen and insertion of the blind, or vice versa. When the screen or blind is arranged in place, the strip F can be adjusted to lock the screen or blind tightly and securely in place on the door-frame. Both of the side strips maybe made adjustable, as shown in Fig. 6; but I believe that it will be sufficient to make only one of these strips adjustable, as shown in the other figures of the drawings.
It will be readily understood that the door can be changed from a screen-door to a stormdoor by removing the screens and inserting the blinds and changed again from a stormdoor to a screen-door by substituting the screens for the blinds. This change can be readily and easily effected without unhinging the door, and the door-frame can therefore be permanently hinged in the casing.
While I have shown two sets of screens and blinds for the door in the drawings, it will be understood that the door-frame may be con structed for one screen and one blind or for any number without departing from the invention. The dovetailed joint formed by the beveled side edges of the screen-frame or blind and the sides of the door-frame will securely hold the screen or blind in place and make a tight joint.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a door-frame composed of a top, a bottom and sides, a crosspiece in the frame between its top and bottom making two openings in the frame, rightangle shoulders on the top and bottom of said cross-piece, strips fastened on the sides of the frame, the inner edges of said strips being beveled and one of said strips being adjustable, strips fastened on the top and bottom of the frame and having straight inner edges, and screens and blinds adapted for use convertibly over the openings in the door, the side edges of the frames of said screens and of said blinds being beveled to fit the beveled edges of the side strips.
