NAM E-- PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 642,803, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed June 19, 1899. Serial No. 721,115. (No model.)
T0 ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMEs H. PAIGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Name- Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in what may be termed name-plates, more especially for doors. i
It has for its objects to provide for readily assembling and firmly holding the individual letters in position in the holder or plate and to greatly simplify the construction of the parts, to lessen cost of manufacture, and otherwise improve the parts.
It consists of the detailed construction of parts, including their combination and arrangement, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
It will be understood that latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed at will or pleasure without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a front View thereof. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section, and Fig. 4 is a detached View of the holding-plate for the individual letters.
In the organization of my invention I employ letter or type plates 1, bearing, as their names indicate, the letters for forming the name and having their ends adapted to form clips 1, the latter being integral with and bent back at right angles to said plates.
2 is a holding-plate upon which are arranged or placed the letter or type plates, the clips 1 of the latter embracing the first-named at its longitudinal edges to efiect the holding of the individual letter or type plates thereon independently of any other means and. yet permit the ready sliding or positioning of said letter or type plates on said holding-plate.
The holding-plate 2 is slightly narrowed or lessened in width toward its ends to facilitate the insertion or slipping of the letter or type plates thereon, as will be readily appreciated. A backing or base 3 is also used to provide the required inflexibility or body to the sign, and between this backing or base and the holding-plate 2 is arranged or interposed, preferably, a piece or strip of rubber 4 to provide for measurably embedding said plate 2 therein as pressure is exerted thereon in clamping the several parts together, and thus effectively secure the removable letter or type plates against displacement when once assembled.
' A face-plate or casing 5, having an oblong opening therein to suitably expose the name produced by the assembled letter or type plates, has end and lateral flanges 5 to flank the corresponding portions of the aforesaid parts, and through said face-plate and the latterv are passed screws or other suitable fastenings 5 which, as turned tightly to their places, will draw upon or clamp the several parts firmly together, causing the portions of said face-plate or casing opposite or resting upon the letter or type plates to bind thereon and more effectively secure the latter in position as against endwise or longitudinal displacement, as would otherwise be liable to occur.
Having thus fully described my invention,
JAMEs iI. PAIGE.
