WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,473, dated January 30, 1900. d
Application filed September 7, 1899. Serial No. 729,711. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES ALEXANDER MONTGOMERY, of Brookwood, in the county of Tuscaloosa and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved 'Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to wrenches having screw and nut for adjusting the movable jaw; and the invention consists of a wrench of this characterembodying certain novel and advantageous features, which will be hereinafter specifically described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved wrench, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof.
My im proved Wrench consists of a iiat shank A, provided at one end with a fixed jaw B and threaded for a portion of its length, as shown at C, Fig. 2. Below its threaded portion the shank has a bushing D fitted thereon and a handle E below the bushing.
F designates the 'movable jaw, which is made in two sections F and F2, and of which the section F' is fitted to slide on the shank, while the section F2 is pivoted by rearwardlyextending ears F3 on a bearing F4 on the rear face of the section F and is pressed on at its upper end by the free end of a spring G, secured to the said section F. The opposing faces of lthe jaws B and F are preferably formed with teeth, so as to readily grasp a pipe or the like.
The section F of the movable jaw is connected by a coupling-lug F5 with a groove H' in the upper portion of a sleeve-nut H, working on the threaded portion of the shank A and having its lower end fitted over the bushing D, as shown. By turning the sleeve-nut H the movable jaw is moved toward or away from the xed jaw.
It will be noted that the section F of the movable jaw completely incloses that portion of the shank on which it is fitted and that Patentthe combined length of such section and the sleeve-nut is so much greater than the length of the threaded portion of the shank that 5o said threaded portion will always be covered, no matter at what adjustment the movable jaw is placed. The threads are thereby rendered always invisible and are completely protected from dust and .other foreign matter, so as to insure an easy working of the wrench at all times.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters l. The herein-described wrench, comprising a shank having a lixed jaw and threaded for a portion of its length, a sleeve-nut tted on said shank and screwing on the threaded portion thereof, and a movable jaw constructed in sections, one of which is slidably tted on the shank and completely incloses from its upper to its lower edge, the shank, and is in engagement with said sleeve-nut, the upper edge of said sleeve -nut fitting 7o closely upon the lower edge of the section and the combined length of the section and nut being so much greater than the length of the threaded portion of the shank that such threaded portion will be always covered, and 7 5 the other section of the movable jaw being pivoted upon the slidable section and springpressed, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A wrench, consisting of a threaded shank having a fixed jaw, a sleeve-nut working on 8o said shank, and a movable jaw constructed -in sections, one of which is slidably fitted on the shank and secured to the sleeve-nut, said section being formed with a bearing on its rear face, the other section being formed with rearwardly-extending ears pivotally connected to said bearing, and a spring secured to the first-named section and bearing against the rear face of the pivoted section, as and for the purpose set forth.
