WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 191%.
Application filed March 15, 1913. Serial No. 754,522.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. MACNEIL, a subject of the King of England, residing at Glace Bay, in the Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to im provem'ents in wrenches, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the same may be easily and quickly adjusted to fit nuts of various sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide wrench of this type which may be quickly adjusted, and held positively adjusted without removing the hand from the handle.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this type which consists of a few parts, and one which can be manufactured at a very small cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 4; is a sectional view on lin of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a handle which terminates at one end in a shank 2 having formed integral with its outer end a fixed jaw 8.
Mounted on the shank 2 is a sliding jaw 4 having pivotally connected thereto the outer end of the plate 5, said plate 5 having its outer surface gradually tapered toward its inner end so as to provide the beveled surface 6. The plate 5 is provided with a longitudinal slot 7 which is engaged by the threaded lug 8 formed integral with the shank 2. The outer end of the threaded lug 8 projects beyond the outer surface of the plate 5 and is engaged by a winged nut 9 which is operable to engage the beveled surface 6 of the plate to hold the sliding jaw at in an adjusted position, or is operable to disengage said surface so that the plate may be shifted longitudinally, and thus the jaw 4 so as to adjust the same for nuts of diiferent sizes. The plate 5 is provided with side flanges 10 which engage the sides of the shank 2, thus preventing the plate from contacting with the threaded lug 8, which if was the case, said lug would be subjected to unnecessary wear.
Formed at the junction of the handle 1 and shank 2 is an annular shoulder 11, and which is engaged by the inner end of the plate 5 to limit the inward sliding movement thereof so that the outer end of the slot 7 will not contact with the threaded lug 8, which would naturally mutilate the threads thereof in time.
One of the flanges 10 is provided with an off-set 12 which is engageable by the thumb of the users left hand, so that the plate 5 and jaw 4 may be moved longitudinally of the shank 2 so that the jaw 4 will engage the nut. after which the winged nut 9 is manipulated into binding engagement with the beveled surface 6 of the plate 5, thereby firmly holding said plate and movable jaw against movement. ,Further it will be noted that by pivotally connecting the plate 5 to the jaw 4 the inner surface thereof will disengage the shank 2 when pressure is applied to said plate to remove the same thus relieving any friction between the plate and shank during adjustment of said plate.
What is claimed is 1. A wrench comprising a shank having a jaw fixed to one end thereof, a movable jaw mounted upon the shank, a plate connected to the movable jaw, said plate having its outer surface beveled, a threaded lug carried by the shank and passable through the slot of the plate, a nut engaging the lug and adapted to engage the beveled surface of said plate to hold the movable jaw in adjusted positions upon the shank.
2. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank, a jaw fixed to the outer end thereof, a movable jaw mounted upon the shank, a plate having its outer end pivot ally connected to the movable jaw, a longitudinal. slot formed in the plate, said plate being provided with a beveled outer sur face, a threaded lug carried by the shank and projected through said slot, a winged nut engaging the lug and adapted to engage the inclined surface of the plate to In testimony whereof, I aflix my signafpree1 the 83131161 irito engagement with. the ture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
smn there y 10 din the movable jaw in adjusted positions in respect to the fixed jaw, THOMAS MACNEIL' and flanges carried by the plate for embrac- Witnesses:
ing the sides of the shank, as and for the JOHN M. MACKENZIE,
purpose set forth. MAMIE MONEIL.
