UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO HESSE, OF ELBERFELD, GERMANY.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro Hnssn, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Elberfeld, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench with open key for six-cornered screw-nuts, of that kind in which a pivotally mounted jaw permits a ratchetlike action of the wrench.
The invention consists in that the pivotal jaw is freely movable beyond its gripping position and the inner gripping face of the fixed jaw is so far placed in the rear that the screw-nut does not come in touch with the same.
The accompanying drawing shows the improved wrench.
Figure 1 is a side view of same, as made entirely of sheet iron, Fig. 2 is an edge View of the wrench shown in Fig. 3, which shows a wrench made of wrought iron.
The jaw a is immovably connected with the handle 1/, while the inner gripping face 0 of said fixed jaw is so far placed in the rear that it does not come in touch with the screw-nut when the wrench is put thereon. The other jaw is pivoted and comprises an inner gripping face (Z and an outer one 6, it being pivoted on a bolt f fixed to an upper extension of the handle. The position of said bolt is so determined that, when pulling the wrench, the jaws rest always entirely on the nutand a closing movement can always occur, 6. 9. that in this way the nut tends always to slip into the key.
By omission of the inner gripping face 0 Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 29, 1912.
Patented Jan. 14, 1913. Serial No. 687,246.
and by the jaws finding an abutment not only on one corner but on the whole nut, as the fixed handle-extension 9 passes behind the jaw wall and the movable jaw is freely movable without abutment, the fixed jaw a is allowed, when turning the wrench, to make a relative outward movement, 6. g. to slip along the corresponding side of the nut. The inner gripping face (Z by its pivotal movement facilitates the complete entrance of the nut between the jaws, so that the wrench slipping-off the nut, and other acci? dents, are avoided.
It lies within the scope of the invention to make the jaw a adjustable, in order to use the wrench for differently sized nuts.
I claim:
A wrench with open key for six-cornered screw-nuts, comprising a fixed jaw having an outer and an inner gripping face, the latter placed so far in the rear of said outer face that it does not come in touch with the nut, a handle integral with said fixed jaw,
an upper extension on said handle, and a movable jaw, having also an outer and an inner gripping face, pivotally mounted on said extension and adapted to freely move beyond its gripping position, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
