Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonn WV. ALIFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stanaford, in the county of Raleigh and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'renches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a wrench structure which may be used either as an ordinary monkey wrench or as a ratchet wrench, having a ratchet handle and an ordinary handle for a monkey wrench detachably connected thereto, so that either may be connected when desired.
Another object of this invention is to provide a wrench body, which includes a pair of pivotally connected semi-circular members having ratchet teeth formed upon their peripheries, and to permanently attach a wrench jaw to one of said semi-circular members, and adjustably support the movable jaw for adjustable movement toward and from said rigid jaw as desired.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the ac companying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 2- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench showing the same used as a ratchet wrench. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the wrench showing the same used as a monkey wrench. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the wrench when used as a ratchet wrench, showing the manner of opening the semi-circular members to permit of the detachment of the ratchet handle. Fig. 1 is an edge elevation of the wrench used as a ratchet wrench. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of a part of the wrench.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 and 2 designate the semi-circular members, which are pivotally connected as is shown at 8. The member 1 has a tongue 4: formed thereon, which is adapted for seating in a recess5 formed in the end of the semi-circular member 2 which faces the end of the member 1 upon which the tongue at is formed. The tongue 4 and the member 2 are provided with alining openings 6, through which a pin 7 extends for connecting the members to form a circular body.
The semi-circu1ar members 1 and 2 are provided with ratchet teeth as indicated at 8 upon their peripheries. A flanged ring 9 is secured to the outer surface of the circular member formed of the semi-circular members 1 and 2 and it is composed of two semi-circular sections, so that it may be opened out when the semi-circular sections or members 1 and 2 are opened for attaching the ratchet handle 10 thereto. The ratchet handle 10 has a pair of spaced arms 11 and 12 formed upon its inner end, which arms are provided with T-shaped recesses 13 which fit the flanged ring 9 as is clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, for connecting the ratchet handle 10 to the circular body formed of the members 1 and 2 to permit of movement of the handle about the circular body and prevent accidental disconnection between the circular body and the ratchet handle. The handle 10 is provided with an opening 14 extending longitudinally therethrough the inner end of which is enlarged as is shown at 15. A plunger or pawl pin 16 is slidably seated in the opening 1 1 and has an enlarged head 17 formed upon its inner end which coacts with the ratchet teeth 8. The head 17 of the pin 16 has its outer end shaped as is clearly shown at 18 in Fig. 7 of the drawings to permit of movement of the handle 10 in one direction independent of the movement of the circular body, and to prevent a reverse movement of the handle independent of the body except when the rod 16 is moved longitudinally for moving the head 17 in a position beyond the outer edges of the ratchet teeth 8. A spiral spring 19 is coiled about the pin 16 to hold the head or pawl 17 outwardly in engagement with the ratchet teeth 8.
The handle 10 is positioned so that the portion 20 thereof upon which the arms 11 and 12 are formed extends beyond one side has a wrench jaw 24 slidably mounted thereon. A feed screw 25 is attached to the jaw 21 and adjustably connected to the sliding jaw 24: for moving the sliding jaw 24 inwardly toward or outwardly from the jaw 21 upon rotation of the screw. A nut 26 is mounted on the feed screw 25 for rotating the same and is positioned in the, recess 22. The shank 23 is provided with an opening 27 extending inwardly from its outer end, which opening is adapted for receiving the tongue 28 formed upon the end of the wrench handle 29.
When it is desired to use the improved -wrench as a ratchet wrench, such as illus trated in Figs. 1, 3 and a of the drawings, the handle 29 is disconnected from the shank 23, and the ratchet handle structure 10 attached to the circular body, by removing the pin 7 and opening the circular body as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, which permits of the attaching of the ratchet handle to the circular body formed by the semi-circular members 1 and 2. After the ratchet handle 10 has been attached, the member 2 is forced inwardly toward the member 1, so that the tongue 4: will be seated in the recess 5, after which the pin 7 is inserted through the opening 6 and a complete circular body is formed. To use the wrench as an ordinary monkey wrench, as illustrated in- Fig. 2 of the drawings, the ratchet wrench handle 10 is removed from connection with the circular body and the handle 29 is attached to the shank 23. What is claimed is 1. In a wrench structure, a substantially circular body composed of a pair of pivotally connected semi-circular members, ratchet teeth formed upon the periphery of said semi-circular members, a ratchet handle detachably connectedto said circular body for coaction therewith, a "rigid wrench jaw rigidly connected to one ofsaid semi-circular members, a shank formed upon said rigid wrench jaw, and a slidable jaw adjustably mounted upon said shank.
' 2. In a wrench structure, a substantially circular body composed of a pair of pivotally connected semi-circular members, said semicircular members having ratchet teeth formed upon their peripheries, a circular flanged washer formed of a pair of semicircular members attached to the outer side of said semi-circular members, a ratchet handle detachably connected to said circular body and slidably supported and guided by said flanged rim, and wrench jaws secured to said circular body.
3. In a wrench structure, a substantially circular body composed of a pair of pivotally connected semi-circular members, a flanged ring secured to the outer side of said semi-circular member and composed of a pair of semi-circular members, ratchet teeth formed upon the periphery of said semi-circular members, a ratchet handle detachably connected to said circular body and being supported and guided by said flanged ring, a spring controlled pawl carried by said ratchet handle for coaction with said ratchet teeth, and wrench jaws carried by said circular body upon the face opposite from said flanged ring.
