Be it known that I, EVERETT ROBERT J ONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milan, in the county of Su mner and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Combination-Tool, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in combination-tools.

1 designates a bar provided at one end with a claw 2, arranged at an angle, provided with teeth, and adapted to form a stationary jaw and cooperate with an adjustable jaw 3 to form either a pipe or nut wrench. The jaw 3 is angularly bent and provided at its inner edge with teeth shouldered at theirinner ends, and the fixed jaw 2 is adapted to be partially rotated, as illustrated in Fig. 1, to extend it toward or from the adjustable jaw to arrange it approximately parallel with the outer portion of the same at an angle thereto. The outer portion of the adj ustable jaw is provided with a slight bend, and when the fixed jaw is arranged as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 it is substantially parallel with the outer portion of the adjustable jaw, and the parts are then adapted to form a nut-wrench. Then the parts are arranged as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the jaws are disposed at an angle and the teeth are adapted to engage a rod, pipe, or other round surface.
The adjustable jaw 3, which may be split, as shown, is provided with a straight shank 4, having an eye 5 adapted to engage a hook 6 of a slide 7, and the latter is mounted on the bar 1. The eye 5 of the shank of the hook is also linked into one end of a chain 8, adapted to engage the hook of the slide for a purpose hereinafter described.
The slide 7, which is provided with a round bore or opening 9, is arranged on the bar 1 and is composed of sections 10 and 11, hinged together at one side of the opening 9 and provided at the opposite side with perforated ears 12, receiving a bolt or screw 13, and the latter, which is provided at one end with a head, has its threads engaged by a clamping-nut 14, adapted to permit the nut to be readily turned, whereby the slide may be clamped on the rod at any desired adjustment. The section 11, which carries the hook 6, is provided with a longitudinal groove 16, contracted at the inner side and forming an eye to receive a rounded rib 18 of the section 10. The connection thus formed between the sections provides sufficient hinge movement to enable the slide to clamp and release the rod or bar 1. The rib 18, which is interlocked with the section 11, is introduced into the groove at one end thereof, and the parts may be readily disengaged from each other when the bolt or screw 13 is removed.
When the parts are arranged as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, the device is adapted to be used as a bolt-holder to prevent a bolt from turningwhile its nut is being screwed on or ott. The stationary jaw or claw is engaged with the head of the bolt, as shown in Fig. 2, and the chain is connected with the hook to permit the movable jaw to be readily interlocked with any fixed object, and as any one of the links of the chain may be arranged on the hook it is an easy matter to engage the movable jaw to anchor the device. This will enable the lever to exert sufflcient pressure upon the head of the bolt or screw to prevent it from rotating.
The invention has the following advantages: The combination tool, which is simple and comparatively inexpensivein construction, is strong and durable, and it is adapted to be easily arranged for engaging either a round or rectangular object, and it forms an efficient pipe and nut wrench. Itis only necessary to rotate the rod or bar 1 one-half a revolution to change the device and convert it into a nut or pipe wrench, and it is readily adjustable to enable it to engage the object to be operated on. The device is also adapted for use as a bolt-holder, and it is capable of engaging the head of a bolt or screw with sufficient pressure to prevent-it from turning while its nut is being screwed on or off.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of theappended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What is claimed is- 1. A device of the class described comprising a bar provided with a fixed or stationary jawarranged at an angle, a slide mounted on the bar, and an adjustable jaw connected with the slide and having an outer engaging portion arranged to cooperate with the fixed or stationary jaw, said bar being adapted to be rotated to extend the fixed or stationary jaw inward or outward to arrange it approximately parallel with the outer portion of the adjustable jaw, at an angle thereto, to form either a pipe or nut wrench, substantially as described.

A device of the class described comprising a bar having a fixed or stationary jaw arranged at an angle, an adjusting-jaw provided with a shank and having an an gularlybent outer engaging portion arranged opposite the stationary or fixed jaw, the latter bein g adapted to be rotated to arrange it at an angle to the adjustable jaw and also approximately parallel with the outer portion of the same and a slide adjustably mounted on the bar and provided with a hook detachably engaging the shank of the adjustable jaw, substantially as described.

A device of the class described comprising a slide having a hook, an adjustable jaw provided with an eye and having a chain, said eye and chain being adapted to engage the hook, and a bar having a stationary jaw and arranged in the slide, said bar being adapted to be rotated to arrange the stationary jaw approximately parallel with the outer portion of the adjustable jaw and at an angle thereto,
substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described comprising a bar having a fixed jaw, aslide composed of two sections, one of the sections being pro vided with a longitudinal groove and the other section having a longitudinal rib arranged in the groove and having a limited movement to form a hinge-joint, means for adjustably connecting the sections, and an adjustable jaw carried by the slide, substantially as described.
