UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'SILAS XV. BENNETT, OF MCDONALD, PENNSYLVANIA.
ENVELOP-CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,417, dated January 30, 1900.
Application filed April 7, 1899. Serial No. 712,142. (No model.)
To col /Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SILAS W. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at McDonald, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered a new and useful Improvement in Envelop- Clips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved envelop-clip applied to a bunch of en- Velops. Fig. 2 is a face view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the joint opened for application to the package. Fig.4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showinga modified construction in which two separate sides are used.
My invention consists of an improved device for securely and compactly inclosing a package of envelops or other papers, and it is made of a single or double wire formed in such a manner as to securely hold the envelops, while being provided with one or more separable joints permitting the device to be opened for ease in operation.
Referring now to the drawings, 2 represents a bunch of envelops adapted to be held together. The clip is made bf a single piece of wire 3, generally rectangular in shape, having an end member 4, adapted to embrace one side of the envelops, parallel upper and lower side members 5 5, with intermediate inwardly-projecting looped spring members 6 6, and supplemental side members 7 7, forming continuations of members 5 5. These members 7 are turned at right angles and are provided with interlocking hook and eye 8 9 at their terminations, the body members 10 of such end extension being substantially parallel with the opposite end 4 when connected. When applied to a bunch of envelops, as I have shown, the flexibility of the Wire and its elasticity will cause considerable pressure to be exerted on the opposite,
stood that the clip might be made in one con-' tinuous piece by joining the ends without a detachable joint, in which case the envelops would be inserted at the end; but I prefer the jointed construction for its greater facility of operation.
My device is very simple and cheap to construct, not liable to get out of order, and affords an easy and ready means for the purpose in view.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A holder for envelops, papers, 850. consisting of a wire formed into a rectangular frame having parallel end members adapted to bear on one side of the package, parallel connecting side members joining the end members and disposed at right angles thereto, inwardly-projecting looped spring members formed integral with the side members and adapted to bear on the opposite side of the package, and an interlocking hook and eye forming connecting terminals of the wire formed in one of the end members.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
SILAS W. BENNETT.
