BROOM-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1907.
Application led March 25, 1907. Serial No. 364,415.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DIoNNE, of Bradford, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Broom-Binders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to that class of devices which are adapted to be bound about an ordinary fiat straw, corn or fiber broom, `so as to bind the fibers of the broom closely together, and has for its object to provide a device oi the above described character which is simple in construction, is adapted to be readily applied to the broom and to clamp the fibers thereof so as to hold them i yieldingly in such a way that it will not tend to break them and which is adapted to be readily applied to the broom in such manner that it will not become disconnected or displaced in use. I accomplish this object by means shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of a broom binder, or bridle made according to my invention.V Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail end view of the connecting hinge joint.
As shown in the drawing the binder is composed of two sections e and b, each of a continuous piece of stiff, but somewhat resilient wire and adapted to be connected together by means hereafter described. The section a comprises a straight middle portion which extends approximately the entire width of the broom and is made extensibly resilient, and of considerable width by forming a series of loops a in the wire, said loops being oppositely and alternately disposed, as shown. One end of the section a is provided with a loop a2 and the other with a right angularly extending portion a, which is adapted to extend a distance approximately equal to the thickness of the broom, and a loop a4 is provided at the end of said portion a2. The ends of some of the loops a are provided with prongs a5 which extend approximately at right angles to the plane of said loops for a distance somewhat less than the thickness of the broom to which the device is designed to be applied. These projections are each formed by extending the loops a/, to which the projections are connected, a suitable distance and then .twisting the extended portions together. Said projections a5 are spaced at suitablel distances apart, four4 being shown. The section b is also provided with an intermediate portion which comprises a series of loops bf, similar in substantially every respect to the loops af, and with an end portion b2v which extends approxi- Y mately at right angles to the plane of the loops b, an eye b3 being formed at the end of said end portion b2 `whchengages the eye a2 of the section u, so as to provide a hinged joint. The opposite end of the section b is provided with a hook portion b4 which is adapted to be hooked into the eye a4 of section a. K
As shown in the drawing, the end portion of the eye a2 is passed over theadjacent portion of the wire so as to form a shoulder or abutment which engages the side (30 of the eye or loop b3 and acts to oppose the swinging of the section btowards the section a, within certain limits, so that, when the two parts are pressed together to catch the hook b4 into the eye a4, the latter part of said motion will be yieldingly resisted, so that the spring action caused by bending the wire of which section b is made, will act to hold the hook b4 in engagement with the eye a, thus preventing the two sections from becoming disengaged.
In applying the binder to the broom, the hook b4 will 70 be disconnected from the eye a'1 and the sections swung apart on their connecting hinge joint formed by eyes` d2, b3, so that the section a maybe readily pressed against one side of the broom in such a manner as to cause the projections a5 to pass between the straws or 75 bers of thebroom. When the inner side oi section a has thus been pressed against the side oi the broom, the section b will be clamped against the opposite side of the broom, its hook b4 being hooked into the eye a4, so that the parts will assume the position indicated'in 8() Fig. l.
The precise point on the broom at which the device may best be applied is a matter oi' judgment, depending largely on how stiff it is desired to have the broom, but it is preferably applied at some distance below the ordinary stitches which bind the broom across the middle portion thereof.
I have found that it is especially desirable to have projections, such as a5, on one section only, for the reason that, if they were placed on both sections, the pro- 9() jections on the section which is swung into position after the other has already been placed in position will be swung laterally, so as to cause them to act to press the fibers nnevenly to one side thus forming open spaces in the broom.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that the series of wire loops which constitute the broom body engaging members of the clamp, are adapted to engage the straws or fibers at different points or to engage adjacent straws or fibers at different distances from the end or face oi the broom, so that the points at which the broom is bound are distributed in such a manner as to prevent the tendency to break off in a straight line, which the bers would be caused to have if the clamp members had straight longitudinal edges. It will be further observed that the `device may be readily changed from one broom toanother, so that one device may be used on different brooms.
Having thus described my invention7 what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. A broom binder comprising two clamping sections pivotally connected at one end and having locking,l means at their opposite ends each section being composed of a continuous length of wire bent to provide a series of oppositely and alternately disposed loops arranged in approximately parallel planes to provide clamping faces, the faces ot ono of said sections being substantially continuous and the other section having a series of holding projections adapted to extend closely adjacent the opposite clampingl face, substantially :is described..
2. A broom binder comprising two clamping sections pivotally connected at one end and having locking' means at their opposite ends, each section being, composed of a continuous length of wire bent to provide a series of oppol sitely and alternately disposed loops arranged in approximately parallel planes to provide clamping faces, the faces of one of said sections being, substantially continuons, a plurality of the loops of the other section having the portions of the Wire of which they are formed extended beyond the end ol. said loops at right angles to the plane thereof and twisted together to provide rigid projecting fingers, said lingers being adapted to extend adjacent the face of the opposite section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
NAPOLEON DIONNE.
