MICHAEL WERNIMONT, OF ASBURY, IOWA.
ADJUSTABLE BAR AND BRACE FOR HANDLING PLOWSHARE;
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 642,396, dated January 30, 1906.
Application filed May 1, 1899. Serial No. '715;091. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL WERNIMONT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asbury, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bars and Braces for Handling Plowshares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In the sharpening and pointing of worn plowshares there has been great difficulty experienced from the fact that when the share is subjected to the influences of heat and pounding it frequently warps or breaks, and when so warped it is next to impossible to again fit it into its former position so/ that it will scour and properly cut and turn over the furrow.
The object of this invention is to overcome these difliculties and to rigidly hold plowshares of diiferent patterns and sizes to their normal shape and prevent them from warping or bending when in the process of sharpening or pointing.
Afurther object is to straighten and bring back to the normal shape plowshares which have been warped in previous sharpening, all of which will be fully developed in the following specification when viewed in connection with the accompanying drawings.
For the better'understanding of my invention attention is called to the following specification and drawings accompanyingthe same, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective taken from the under side of a plowshare with my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the adjusting-braces. Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the braces which is adapted to adjust with Fig. 2. a plate for adjustment with the landside of the plowshare, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the device attached to the plowshare.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the drawings.
In the drawings, A designates a plowshare having the point a and provided with the holes 1) and N for attachment tothe plow.
B is a bar of iron having a beveled point, which is adapted to fit into the cavity din Fig. 4 is a perspective of the point of the plowshare. This bar B is provided with numerous holes 0, f, g, and P. There is also a slot D in said bar. A plate E (shown in Fig. 4) is adjustably fitted to the outside of the plate B and securely held in position by the bolts 1' and j for the purposes presently to appear.
The rear end of the plowshare A is connected to the rear of the bar B by two adj ustable plates G and H. The plate G is provided with a slot 7c, extending nearly its entire length, and also a bolt-hole e and the thumb-screws n. The thumb-screws are set in one side of the end of the plate for the purposes hereinafter to appear.
The plate H, as shown in Fig. 3, consists of a cen tral strap bent at right angles at one end and formed into a transverse plate at the other end, having therein a slot 0, and is also provided with the bolt-holes p and q.
The manner of using my device is as follows: The point of the bar B is inserted in a cavity (1 beneath the plow-point parallel with the landside of the point and is adjusted to meet the different shapes of the cavities din various plows by the bolt 0, inserted in some one of the numerous holes 0 and passing through the landside. By means of this bolt 0 the bar B is rigidly fastened to the inner side of p the plow-point and prevents, with the other parts hereinafter described, any warping of the plow-point when heated.
In order to hold the point of the plowshare from warping in another direction, a plate E (shown in Fig. et) is loosely bolted to the bar B bythe bolt 1; and the bolt j is inserted in one of the slots m and passes through the slot D of the bar B. If the rear end of the plowpoint is perpendicular, as shown in Fig. 5, then the plate E is set as shown in Fig. 5 and held by the bolt 1' and the bolt j, which brings the square end of the plate E rigidly against the perpendicular end F of the plowpoint. If, however, the end F forms an obtuse angle with the base of the plow-point, then the bolt j is raised or lowered in the slot m to adapt it to fit snugly against the rear end F of the plow-point. If the end F is an acute angle, then the plate E is turned upon the pivot of the bolt '0', and the other end I is placed against the end F and the bolt j is inserted in the other slot at near the end I.
In this manner the bar B and the plate E are adapted to be adjusted to plow-points having different rear ends and different cavities beneath the point.
It will be observed that when the parts E and B are assembled in the manner specified the end of the plate E may be adjusted to heels of plowshares of any angle and when adjusted will not interfere in either measuring or observing from the rear of the bar B any curvature or warping that maybe in the point of the plow.
For the purpose of holding the plowshare Afrom warping along the upper edge and center when it is being sharpened the plate Gis loosely fastened by the bolt e to the rear end of the plowshare, and the plate H is loosely fastened by a bolt 4" passing through the hole q and the slot 7c of the plate G. This plate His further secured to the bar B by the bolt H passing through one of the holes P. After the plates G and H have been loosely attached to the bar B and the share A the bolts h, r, K, and c are screwed up, and this forms a rigid brace from the bar B to the outer end of the share A. If the share be curved at the outer end, then the plate G is adapted to meet such curvature by the thu mbscrews 77., which are situated to one side of the hole 6 of the plate G. It will be seen that by these thumb-screws n the plate G may be turned at an angle with reference to theshare A and adapted to any curvature of the outer end of the share. Again, for the purpose of adj usting it to plowshares of different lengthsfor instance, if the plowshare only extended slightly beyond the hole l -then the bolt 6 would pass through the hole N of the plowshare A and the plate G would be turned upon the pivot of the bolt 7' and the bolt would be turned to the inner end of the slot 0 of the plate H, and if it appeared to be too short for the brace to be adjusted to the share of that length then the bolt 7L would be inserted in the hole P nearest to the plow-point, or if the plowshare was longer than the one shown in Fig. 1 then the bolt It would be inserted in the hole P at the outer end of the bar B.
Vhen the bolt 0 is inserted in one of the holes 0, whereby the outer end of the bar 13 is caused to turn outside of a perpendicular and not parallel with the part S of the brace II, then there is inserted a set-screw in the holef or g, which presses against the upper or lower end of the part S and adjusts the part S to the bar 13, and thus the rigidity of the brace between the share A and the bar B is maintained.
It will be seen by the use of these various plates adjusted in the manner above described that they will be adapted to exactly tit and rigidly hold all plowshares of different length, width, and spread, and whenever the plowshare is subjected to heat or pounding it will retain the same position that it had when removed from the plow; also, after the plowshare has been sharpened or pounded and tempered it can be returned to the plow and exactly fitted in the position it was before sharpening.
After the device has been adjusted to the plowshare then the device may be used in the place of tongs or other tools for handling plowshares either in the fire or upon the anvil.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, a bar provided with means for adjust-ably securing it at one end to the rear of a plowpoint and a brace for connecting the rear end of said bar with the outer end of a plowshare, consisting of two rods slotted at right angles to each other, for the purposes shown.
2. A device of the character described, consisting of a bar provided with means for adj ustably attaching it to the under side of a plow-point, a plate adj ustably attached to said bar and adapted to engage the rear of the plow-point, and a brace for adjustably connecting the rear of said bar, and the outer end of a plowshare, the plate and brace being slotted at right angles to each other, for the purposes shown.
3. A device of the character described, consisting of a bar 13, adapted to be adjustably secured by bolt (J, to the landside of a plowpoint, and a brace formed of the two parts G and H,ad j ustabl y secured together and adapted to be adjustably secured to the rear of the bar Band the outer end of a plowshare, as and for the purposes shown.
4. An implement of the class described, comprising the plate B adapted to engage the under side of the plow-point, the plate E having one of its ends square and the other formed at an acute angle and pivoted to the plate B, and provided with slots whereby it may be adjusted to heelsof plowshares having different angles, and so adjusted to the plate B that it shall not interfere with measurements or line of observation, and an adjustable brace con necting the rear'of the plate 13 with the rear of the plowshare, for the purposes shown.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
