UNITED. STATES PATENT rerun.
JAMES W. MONTGOMERY, "OF THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,859, dated July 29, 1884-.
Application filed April 29, 1884. (No model.)
21'; m4 whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES W. 1\IONTGOM- ERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomasville, in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blows, of which the following is a description.
' This invention relates to that class of plows which may be changed to use as either shovelplows or cultivators, and may be narrowed or widened to suit the width of rows to be cultivated.
The object of the invention is to adapt the plow-stock and plow-beams so that the plows maybe set in different relations to each other fore'and aft, and at different distances apart transversely, and so that one plow may be removed, leaving the other to be used singly.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a plow, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a plow showing my invention.
A B represent two beams, each curved down ward into a hook shape, and provided with a plow blade or share. The forward end of beam A is provided with a clevis, O, for attaching a team. D D are two brackets or angle-plates secured to the side of beam A by means of clamp-screws E. By means of the clampscrews the angle-plates may be set at any desired points along beam A.
F is a double bracket consisting of the body part a and the two crossbars b. The brackets D rest against the cross-bars b, and the adjacent faces of both are vertically corrugated to register with each other, so that they may be separated and placed together again in different relations to each other.
G andI-I are screw-clamps surrounding the two parts to hold them together at any desired point along their juncture. The clamp G is beam B is shorter than beam A, and it is secu red to the body part a of the bracket F by means of clampscrews J. By this arrangement the plow B may be set forward of plow A to act therewith as a cultivator; or it may be set with the two plows side by side to act as a covering-plow; or the plow B may be detached from the stock entirely, and the team hitched to the clevis on the plow A, adapting it for use as a single plow.
By means of the clamp-screws G and H, the
cross-beams may be extended or shortened to widen or narrow the furrow of the plow when used double- The handles L may be attached to the frame formed by the brackets D and F by any usual means.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the plow B and the bracket F, having the two corrugated arms 6 secured thereto, of the plowA, the two corru gated brackets D, and the clamps E, securing the brackets D to plow A, the corrugations of the brackets D and 12 being adapted to register with each other, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the plow A, the
two corrugated brackets D, and the clamps E,
of the bracket F, having two corrugated arms,
I), the plow B, and the clamps J, adjustable along the bracket F and the beam of plow B,
substantially as described, whereby the two plows may be adjusted fore and aft relatively to each other, for the purpose specified.
JAMES W. MONTGOMERY.
