UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo KEZIA JANE HUTOI-IISON, OF KNOXVILLE, OHIO.
HERMETICALLY-SEALED CAN OR JAI?.y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,391, dated January 16, 1900.
Application iiled June 28, 1899.
T0 all whom it 11o/ty concern.-
Be it known that I, KEZIA JANE HUTCHI- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hermetically-Sealed Cans or Jars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a'part of this specifica-tion.
This invention relates to improvements in closures for cans of that class in which thev cap has a ilange or projecting rim atits lower end to bear upon the outer face of the top of the can; and it has for its objects to provide an improved cap of this character by which the can may be hermetically sealed without Y the employment of a gasket or the like and a tight joint formed at the top of the neck as well as at the bottom thereof at its junction with the top of the can.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specicallydeiined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form part of this application, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a cap and can embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the cap and can, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the screw-threaded neck of the can.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a can of any construction which has either its entire upper end tapered or a portion of its top adjacent to the aperture upon which the cap is fitted, as shown at A. At a location adjacent to the threaded neck of the can the top turns in at an angle, as shown clearly in the drawings, forming a shoulder B, while at the extreme upper end of the threaded neck the top is broadened, thus presenting a considerable amount of the upper face of the top thereto as a bearing-surface against the under face of the top of the cap. The cap D has the internal threads D and is of the usual Y Serial No. 722,155. (No model.)
construction as far as the threaded portion is concerned; but the lower portion of the cap is outwardly bent, as at E, and thence downwardly and outwardly flared, forming the flange F, which flange and shoulder formed between said ange and the threaded portion of the cap are adapted to conform to the angle of the shoulder on the upper or top portion of the can adjacent to thev threaded neck, whereby as the cap is screwed upon the neck of the can said iiange willtit over the angled portion of the top tightly and produce a hermetically-sealed joint. As the length of the threaded neck on the can is the same as the threaded portion of the cap, it will be noted that the broadened and flat portion at the extreme top of the neck of the can will bear tightly against the under face of the top of the cap, thus producing two hermeticallysealed joints.
The cap is made of soft metal, so that as it is screwed down it readily adapts itself to any irregularities in the portions of the neck and can with which it engages, and the threads of the neck will thus be snugly embraced by the cap and the cap will be made to tightly bind against and hug every portion of the can with which it contacts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a can having a screwthreaded neck extending above its top with the extreme upper end of the said neck terminating in an inwardly-extending broadened horizontal flange, the top of the can in proximity to the junction with the said neck being formed with an inclined shoulder and a downward and outward incline upon a different angle, of a soft-metal cap having a portion to rest upon the horizontal flange of the neck and a threaded portion to engage the threads of the neck and at the lower end of the threaded portion with a flange or rim extending outwardly and downwardly upon two different inclines whereby a tight joint is formed with the can-top, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
KEZIA JANE HUTOHISON.
