Be it known that I, YUBIE IV. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CombinationChairs5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

My invention relates to improvements in combination-chairsg and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the bed of the table or desk.

The object of my invention is to construct a chair in such a manner that when the parts are properly adjusted a combined chair and desk is provided, or table, as may be preferable, the chair proper and other parts comprising the same being provided with drawers and other receptacles for containing stationery, books, or similar articles, the device when in a closed position forming a perfect chair, which can be moved from place to place in the usual manner when the desk or table is not desired to be used in connection therewith, and consequently an extra chair commonly employed in connection with a desk or table is dispensed with.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the chair proper, the seat portion of which may be upholstered in any desirable manner and is supported by the short front legs 2 and the rear long legs 3, the latter having movably secured thereto the parts which comprise the table.

2 and 3 by suitable guides i is a movable receptacle 5, provided with pigeonholes or other spaces for stationery, books, or other articles, said receptacle having forward depending legs (i, the lower ends of which are provided with rollers, whereby the receptacle is properly supported when drawn outwardly from under the seatl when it is desired to remove the papers or other articles contained within the same.

The upper ends of the long legs 3 of the chair are each provided with forks 7 which are adapted to receive the pins 8, secured to the opposite ends of. the strip 9, fastened to the lower surface of the bed 10 of thetable, said strip being located at one end of said bed, and hinged to the opposite edge of the bed 10 are two leaves 11, which when the table is not in use are folded against the upper surface of the bed, a lock 12 being employed to hold said leaves in a closed position, and carried by and secured to the lower surface of the bed 10 of the table is a receptacle 13 in the form of a drawer for containing envelops and papers or other articles of that character, said lower surface of the bed of the table forming a back for the chair when the desk or table is not in use, as it is to be observed that after the supports to be hereinafter described in connection with the bed of the table or desk are removed the said bed will fall and be located between the long legs 3 of the chair after its leaves 11 have been folded in the position shown in Fig. 3.

Hinged to the legs 8, adjacent to the lower ends thereof, are the lower ends of a frame 14, the horizontal connecting-piece 15 forining the upper portion ot' said frame, which is adapted to support the bed of the table when the saine is in a horizontal position and also forms an ornament for the chair above the upper ends of the legs 8 when the said frame is in a closed position, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l. Hinged to the frame 14 at a suitable distance from the upper end of the saine is a supporting-fraine 16, the lower end of which is adapted to come in contact with the floor, whereby the table or desk is properly supported when in use, the said supportu ing-frame 1G folding against the frame 14E when the parts are in a closed position.

Hinged to each side of the legs 3, near the upper ends of the same, is an arm 17, the free end of the long arin of which is adapted to be brought in contact with the hinged leaf 11 of the bed 10 of the table or desk when it is desired to incline the same for better accommodations in writing, and inovably secured to the enlarged short arm of the said arm 17 is one end of a rod 18, the lower end of which is movably secured to a foot-lever 19, one end of which is movably secured or hinged to the IOC short leg 2, adjacent to the lower end of the same, whereby the feet of the operator or the person sitting upon the chair are brought to bear upon said lever 19 and operate to elevate the free end of lthe arm 17, and thereby incline one of said leaves 11 or that above the arm. When the table or desk is folded or not desired to be used, the lever 19 is elevated, causing the arm 17 to drop by the side of the leg 3,. to which it is pivoted, and in order to hold the arm 17 in an elevated position a lug 2O is secured to each of the legs 3, adjacent to the lower ends of the same, under which the lever 19 is adapted to be placed, as shown in full lines, Fig. 1.

I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts as herein shown and described, as the same may be varied in many respects Without departing from the nature of my invention. For instance, the various receptacles for containing stationery, books,'and the like may be differently arranged and constructed, and the movable portions which form the support for the table or desk maybe differently constructed and arranged, the principal object being to construct a combined chair .and table or desk in such a manner that the back thereof may be elevated in such a position as to form a desk or table and suitable means for supporting the same.

Secured to one side of the sup porting-frame 16 is a hook 21, and projecting from one side of one of the rear legs 3 of the chair is a pin 22, whereby the hinged frames 14 and 16 are held in a closed position against the legs 3 when the desk or table is not in use, the latter under these circumstances being in a substantially perpendicular position, forming a back for the chair.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1'. A combination-chair comprising a hinged back, leaves hinged to the opposite edges of the said back, and adapted to fold against the latter, means for supporting the said back in a horizontal position, and a separate device adapted to cooperate with each one of the said leaves for inclining the saine, as and for the purpose described.

2. A combination-chair comprising a hinged back, leaves hinged to the opposite edges cf said back, and adapted to fold against the latter, means for supporting the back in a substantially horizontal position, an arm pivoted to the rear legs, the free end of which is adapted to cooperate with one of said leaves, a rod, one end of which is inovably secured to the short end of the said arm, a lever, one endof which is lnovably secured to the chair proper, and to which the opposite end of said rod is movably attached, and means for holding the said lever in a locked position, whereby the said arm is held in an elevated position for holding its appropriate leaf in an inclined position, as and for the purpose described.

3. A combination-chair comprising a hinged back, leaves hinged to the opposite edges of said back,a support or fram-e, the lower end of which is hinged to the rear legs adjacent to the lower ends thereof, a transverse piece secured to said frame upon which the back is adapted to rest when in an elevated position, a second frame hinged to the first-named frame, adjacent to the upper end of the same, both of said frames being adapted to fold against the rear portion of said chair, and means for holding either one of said leaves of the back in an inclined position, as and for the purpose described.
