UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo DANIEL CRO\VLEY, 0F BOSTON, )l.ASS.\CHUSETTS.
CONVERTIBLE TABLE, LOUNGE, AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION Iormng part of Letters Patent. No. 350,414, dated October 5,1886.
Appliralion tiled November fl, 188.7. Serial No. l-|,Et TA To U whom, it may concern:
e it known that l, luster. ("nowLnv. a citizen of the llnited Statt-s, residing at. liosv4 ton, inthe county ot Sutlolk and State ol' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in :i (lionvertihle Table. Lounge, and Desk. of which the following' is a speeilieation.
.lhe ohjeet of in v invention is to produee a convertible lounge, table, and desk; and the invention eonsists in a` frame mounted upon adjustable standards in such manner that when used as a. lounge it can he adjusted to a suitable height for sitting upon, and when desired for use asa tahle eau he raised to the required height and the lounge turned over so that its under side will forni the top of the tahle and the back one ot' the leaves; and the invention further consists in certain details of construetion, ln-reiualler fully described, and pointed out in the Claims.
tel'erring to the aeeonipanyine` drawings, Figui-el is a perspeet ive view ot` in v invention shown as a lounge, one of the end pit-ees being removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view shown as a tnhle. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sect ion asntahie with theleaves extended. Fig. A1 is a vertical transverse sl-etion when adjusted as a desk. Fie'. 5 is a vertical transverse section ut one end when used as a lounge.
A A represent two side trames or standards. secured together by rods or bars l l. At the haelt or inner side of eaeh of these l'rntnies is secured a soelcet, C, in which a rack, D, is free to work up and down. Each of these racks gear with a pinion, E, placed on a stud ou the inside ofthe frame A, the pinious E being in gear with other pinions mounted on a rod or shaft', G, that has its bearings in the frames A. One end of the shaft G passes ont beyond the frame, and is formed with a square, g, onto which a key or lever, ll, fits, by which the rod G is turned so as to raise or lower the racks D through the pinions E F. lf desired, the pinions 1G may'be dispensed with and the pinons F be made to gear directly with the racks I).
I is a spring-pawl fulerumed on the bar G, so that when in its normal position it will be incggtact with the teeth of the ruck D; but when de'srd to lower the rack the pawl may be drawn out; 0f Contact with the rack by pressing ou its rear end. The upper ends ot' the (Nu tuorli-Ll racks l) are fm'xned with arms or proieetions d, one ot` which is provided with aspringdateh, (l, and thel other with a lhulnh-serew, I); or they may hoth be titled with spring tutelles or thunihserews, and these latches or thunil screws may he employed at one or both ends of the combined lounge and table.
J is a rectangular frame, provided at each end with a plate, j. .lhis frame is hung hy 1neansot` bolts c tothe upper ends ol' the raelts l), so that it is l'ree to turn over. hutis held in the desired position b v means of the springlateh n or thumb-screws I: passing into holes formed in the plate), rthere is a series ol` these holes on eaeh side ot` the plate. so as to ghe an) desired in'liuation to the t'ranie .l when used as :t desk, or when used :is alounge to ineliinl the seat, if desired', but when the latch or thuinh-serrws are inthe tenter hoh-s' the traine will he held level.
The traine .l is provided with solid indium li, which, when turned over. forms thtI topol' the table, the upper side ot' the t'rann:` heine, upholstered to torni the seat t) of the lounge.
The inner side ol' eaeh end piece ot the t'r-.nin-y J is provided with a inelal strap or socket, L, (see Fig. 5ft for the purpose ol' securing.:` the head-pieces )lV lo the t'raxue J, each head-piece )t being provided with a tongue or dat piece ot'nletal, N, which eau he slipped into thesoeket L, so as to tirnily hold the head-piece in position, and when the head-pieces are not required they can he easily removed and placed in drawers P l in the freine J.
The baelc ot' the lounge consists of a flut board, R, hinged to the rear of the frame J, and upholstered on one side to forni the loungebaek V, the other side'seiving as one of the leaves t'or the table. \\"hen used as a lounge, the back is supported by means of hooks c. secured to theend pieces of the frame J, and passing into eyesf, secured to the bnek R. The back may be hung so as to be removed altogether, if desired.
S is a flat board hinged to the front of the frame J, and forms the otherleaf of the table. Then used as a lounge, this leaf isfolded under the bottom of the traine J and secured hy a hook, It, passing overa pin inthe side of the leaf.
T T are bolts or supporting-hars that slide in suitable recesses in the frame J and they Tiel are employed for supporting the leaves R S when used as a table. f On one side there are two of these bolts, one, T, for supporting the leaf R, as shown in Fig. 3, anda sliding support, T, that is partially beveled oil, as shown, iorsupporting the said leaf on :1 level when the table is used as a desk, as shown in Fig. l.
If desired, braeliets or supports it' may be formed on the frames A, as shown in Fig. 5, so that when used as a lounge the bottom ol' trame J may rest; upon them, thereby giviner additional support thereto.
To change the lounge, as shown in llig. l, to a table, as shown in Fig. 2, the hey or lever H is placed upon the square end q ot" rod (l and turned, which through gearsy ll vll euuses the laeks l) to be raised. and with them the frame J, the spring-pawl i ret-.tilting them in the raised position. When raised to thil re quired height, the thumb sel-ew Il is looseiwd and one end of an ordinary spring lateh. n, withdrawn, when the frame is trecto revolve on the bolts f'. lt is then turned hnltulrv round, thus bringing the bottom l\'. ott he I'rume to Lhetop. when thetable will appear as shown in Fig. 2. The hooks] ll are then drawn bueh and the leaves can be opened. Fo ehnne'ethe table Lo a lounge the operation is reversed.
W'hen desired to l'orm a desk, :is shown in Fig. 4, the thnmlrserew /l and spring-lateh o are inserted into the holes in plzne j. so ns to give the desired inelinntion.
instead ol' the racks l) and pinions. seven-s and worms muy be, emploved to roiseand lower the frame .l.` and, instead ol' the lenl S being hinged as shown in Fig. t, il muy he hinged as shown at s in Fie'. 2, so that il is tree lo swing;l round so :is to hung down` as shown in dotted lilies.
Although l llxlvc deseribed my invention with reference to a lounge, it is obvious that it would apply equally well to :in ensy ehnir. the onl\Y dilierenee being in the length ol` the rcetangnlar frame J.
I am aware of the.construction shown in the patent o1' \Voli`, No. lhil. I :nn also aware that a rack has been used to raise a t'rame holding :1n invalid from :1 bed, as shown in English Patent 2,275 of 1872. Such l do not claim; but;
'hat I claim as my invention isl. In a convertible table and lounge` the i'ralne (l, constituting the eenter et' the seat and capable of being turned upside down. the leaves it and S, forming' a portion ol'the tabletop, the racks I), and standards A, as shown and described.
